Kennedy said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he is planning to run for reelection to the Senate but would run for president if he felt he could no longer be effective in Congress and the field of White House candidates wasn’t strong enough.

“What’s the old Judds song? Why not me on a rainy day?” he said. “But I haven’t made a decision.”

Kennedy, 74, is an ally of President Donald Trump’s but has criticized him on some issues. He is known for his quips and colorful southernisms.

Vice President JD Vance is widely seen by many in his party as the likely 2028 GOP presidential front-runner. That has not stopped others from dropping hints about a possible run, including Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who has visited Iowa, the first GOP nominating state. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky), has said he is considering running and will make a decision after the midterms.

“On my side of the aisle, if a bunch of goobers run, and I think they’re goobers and one of the goobers might win, and I think I could do a better job, I would consider running,” Kennedy said. “But right now, I’m running for reelection.”
