The matchup will test the strength of the Democratic Party’s progressive wing — and the congresswoman’s potential 2028 chances — in a battleground state.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) will campaign next week in Michigan alongside Abdul El-Sayed, the state’s Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, she said Friday.
The congresswoman, a potential 2028 presidential candidate, will join El-Sayed on a bus tour through Michigan’s rural Upper Peninsula on Thursday, including stops in Escanaba, Iron Mountain and Marquette.
She will rally for him the following day at Oakland University and Eastern Michigan University, and then hold a “Latinos for Abdul” event in Detroit.

Michigan’s presidential primary will be fifth on Democrats’ 2028 calendar. El-Sayed’s tight race against former congressman Mike Rogers (R) will test the strength of the Democratic Party’s progressive wing in a battleground state.
That may offer signals for Ocasio-Cortez, who has said she will make a decision about whether to seek higher office after the midterm elections. She appeared alongside El-Sayed at a closed-door fundraiser in New York this week in which she was recorded saying, “If Abdul can win in Michigan, anybody can win anywhere.”
In a statement, she said, “Abdul has built a winning coalition with an agenda to bring down costs for Michigan families and I could not be more excited to join him for the final stretch of this race.”
