The Washington Commanders announced that they parted ways with tight ends coach Ben Steele on Monday.

Steele was let go because of a violation of team policy, according to a person familiar with the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal team matters. Per court records, he was arrested June 7 in Loudoun County and subsequently charged with four violations, including driving while intoxicated. Steele was also charged with refusing a blood/breath test, obstructing/resisting arrest without force and changing course after signaling.
Steele was placed on administrative leave after he notified the Commanders of the arrest, according to the person familiar with the situation. The team also reported the incident to the NFL office. Offensive assistant Wes Welker handled Steele’s duties during the Commanders’ mandatory June minicamp.
The decision came before the start of training camp Tuesday. In a social media post, the team said it would have “no further comment at this time.”

The Commanders hired Steele in March after David Raih was promoted from tight ends coach to offensive pass game coordinator. Steele had spent the previous three seasons as the Arizona Cardinals’ tight ends coach.
Commanders Coach Dan Quinn and General Manager Adam Peters were already scheduled to address the media on Tuesday.
