Nick Reiner has been indicted on murder charges in the killing of his filmmaker father and mother, Los Angeles prosecutors announced Wednesday.
The indictment — returned last month and unsealed Wednesday — charges Reiner with intentionally killing his parents by “lying in wait.” Reiner, 32, is accused of fatally stabbing his father, the actor and director Rob Reiner, and his mother, Michele Singer Reiner, in their Los Angeles home late last year.
Nick Reiner pleaded not guilty Wednesday to two counts of murder with special circumstances, authorities said.
“This was a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said in a statement.

The district attorney said authorities will decide whether to seek a death penalty at a later date. Reiner is being held without bail.
The younger Reiner had clashed with his parents over the years and struggled with addiction, according to the family’s accounts and people who knew them.
Reiner is set to return to court for a pretrial hearing Sept. 15, according to the district attorney.
