The Log Cabin Republicans, a conservative group that has long advocated for LGBTQ Americans, will no longer focus on transgender issues, the group’s board president announced in an op-ed. Instead, the influential group will rebrand itself as an “LGB advocacy organization.”

The board first agreed to support transgender people in 2015, Ross Hemminger wrote in Townhall, “out of a belief that all adults should be allowed to pursue their own happiness, free of government interference, as long as it did not impede on the inalienable rights of others.”
The group began to reconsider its position, Hemminger said, because it felt that transgender activists and advocacy groups have changed their focus from adults to minors.
At least one former board member for the Log Cabin’s educational arm said she was disappointed in the announcement. “Until now, LCR’s legacy has been inclusion and building a big tent,” Sarah Hunt wrote.

In his op-ed, Hemminger said gay and lesbian people had lost political ground because many voters’ “view of the gay community is based on today’s radical transgender activists with their unnecessary and discomfiting focus on America’s youth.”
