House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) on Monday called Rep. Max Miller (R-Ohio) a “great member of Congress” and endorsed Miller’s bid for a third term, despite allegations of domestic violence by his ex-wife.

As Johnson walked through the Capitol on the House’s first day back after a month-long recess, CNN’s Manu Raju asked whether he supports the reelection of Miller, who denies his wife’s allegations.
“Yes,” Johnson said. “He has been a great member of Congress. He has some issues in his personal life he’s working through. The House Ethics Committee is looking into that and any applications it may have.”
The ethics committee announced earlier this month that it is investigating accusations that Miller physically abused his ex-wife and daughter.

After their divorce last year, Miller’s ex-wife alleged in court filings that he threw hot water on her from a pan of eggs he had just cooked, once held a gun to her head and hurt their two-year-old daughter, who suffered a fractured collarbone in February. Miller has dismissed the claims as fabrications during a messy custody battle.
“You’ve heard me say it a thousand times, we’ve got to let due process play out,” Johnson said Monday.
