Schumer (D-New York) and his allies view state Rep. Josh Turek as the party\u2019s best shot at flipping Iowa in November and helping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/05\/07\/senate-control-democrats-midterms-elections\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/05\/07\/senate-control-democrats-midterms-elections\/\">Democrats recapture the Senate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, state Sen. Zach Wahls, who is running against Turek in Tuesday\u2019s primary, sees Schumer as part of the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Wahls has repeatedly laid into Schumer on the campaign trail, pledging not to support him as the Democratic leader in the Senate if he wins. (Kathryn Gamble\/For The Washington Post)<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Speaking to a crowd in a packed bar in Mason City last month, Wahls said, \u201cIt is going to be a hell of a lot easier to win back the voters whose trust this party has lost with a candidate who can look them in the eye and tell them with a straight face: I don\u2019t owe Chuck Schumer or anybody else in Washington, D.C., a damn thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The race in Iowa is the first of a trio of Democratic Senate primaries this summer \u2014 followed by Michigan and Minnesota \u2014 that will test how much appetite the party\u2019s voters have for candidates skeptical of Democratic leadership in Washington.<\/p>\n<p>State Sen. Mallory McMorrow, a Democrat running in the Michigan primary, has said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2025\/03\/25\/mallory-mcmorrow-michigan-senate-chuck-schumer-00246369\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2025\/03\/25\/mallory-mcmorrow-michigan-senate-chuck-schumer-00246369\">she will not support Schumer<\/a> if she wins. Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, who is facing a more moderate Democrat in Minnesota, has said she is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/12\/10\/2025\/how-minnesota-reflects-democrats-big-divides\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/12\/10\/2025\/how-minnesota-reflects-democrats-big-divides\">\u201cuncommitted\u201d<\/a> to Schumer.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) is backing McMorrow, Flanagan and Wahls, describing their primaries as a chance \u201cto bring in some fresh blood that\u2019s ready to reset the Democratic agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll three of them have laid out a bold agenda for lowering costs for working families,\u201d Warren said. \u201cAnd all three have said they will not be beholden to the Democratic establishment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other Senate Democrats are backing their rivals \u2014 Turek, Rep. Haley Stevens in Michigan and Rep. Angie Craig in Minnesota \u2014 arguing they have a better shot in November.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you don\u2019t pick the right people, you could potentially lose the general,\u201d said Sen. (Kathryn Gamble\/For The Washington Post)<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Of the three states, Iowa is the steepest climb for Democrats, making electability all the more important.<\/p>\n<p>Turek has leaned into his personal story to make his case. Born with spina bifida, Turek won gold medals in the Paralympics playing wheelchair basketball. He won a Republican-leaning state House seat after hauling himself up steps using his arms to knock on voters\u2019 doors and dragging his wheelchair with him.<\/p>\n<p>Schumer is unpopular. More Democrats said they disapproved of his record as Senate minority leader than approved, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/movinginsiderusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/305bf36d6db965104205736c24ad7536.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/d3nkl3psvxxpe9.cloudfront.net\/documents\/econTabReport_3wplfYX.pdf\">an Economist\/YouGov poll<\/a> in March. But Turek \u2014 who has not criticized Schumer \u2014 noted that voters bring up the cost of living, not Schumer, when he knocks on their doors. He said he is focused on defeating Rep. Ashley Hinson, the likely Republican nominee for the seat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not running against Schumer,\u201d Turek said. \u201cI\u2019m running against Ashley Hinson and Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Turek has had help in the primary from an unusual ally: VoteVets, a super PAC that typically supports Democratic veterans and their families. Turek is not a veteran, although his father served in Vietnam. (Kathryn Gamble\/For The Washington Post)<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Wahls has accused Schumer of orchestrating the VoteVets ads, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/05\/13\/votevets-spending-joshua-turek-roils-iowa-democratic-senate-primary\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/05\/13\/votevets-spending-joshua-turek-roils-iowa-democratic-senate-primary\/\">VoteVets and Schumer have denied<\/a>. Wahls has built his case against Schumer around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/clip\/public-affairs-event\/user-clip-for-every-blue-collar-democrat-we-losewe-will-pick-up-twocollege-educated-republicans\/5154759\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/clip\/public-affairs-event\/user-clip-for-every-blue-collar-democrat-we-losewe-will-pick-up-twocollege-educated-republicans\/5154759\">comments that the Democratic leader made a decade ago<\/a>, when he predicted ahead of the 2016 election that Democrats would win over two or three moderate Republicans in the Philadelphia suburbs for every blue-collar voter the party lost in western Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat math might work in New York,\u201d Wahls said at his Mason City event. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t work in Iowa. And frankly, that is not the Democratic Party that I want to belong to.\u201d<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/movinginsiderusa.com\/?p=2325\">Early Brief: The liberal-establishment divides in California\u2019s House primaries<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Schumer was wrong about Pennsylvania \u2014 Trump carried the state in 2016, while Democrats lost a close Senate race \u2014 but his party has also seen victories under his leadership. Democrats won close Senate races in Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevada and Arizona in 2024, even as Trump won those states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeader Schumer is focused on one thing: taking back the Senate to stop Donald Trump\u2019s reign of devastation, chaos, and high costs for American families,\u201d Allison Biasotti, a Schumer spokeswoman, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview after his Mason City event, Wahls faulted Turek for not breaking with Schumer, describing it as an \u201cenormous liability\u201d for Turek if he wins the primary.<\/p>\n<p>Wahls\u2019s criticism of Schumer has drawn applause at events \u2014 \u201cYou had me at your Schumer,\u201d one woman told him in Indianola \u2014 but it may be driving other Democrats away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJosh, I\u2019m supporting you,\u201d Richard Higdon, 68, told Turek after he spoke in Osceola, Iowa. \u201cThe main reason is I heard your primary opponent speak, and he spent half his time attacking Chuck Schumer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like<b> <\/b>Turek, Wahls has a compelling personal story to tell. He went viral at 19 after he testified before an Iowa state House committee about being raised by lesbian parents as the state was considering banning same-sex marriage. Now 34, he has struck a more pugnacious tone while campaigning than Turek, which has helped him win over some voters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like that Zach is a little bit more progressive and he\u2019s willing to push the envelope a bit more,\u201d said Athena Levad, 28, who lives in Mason City and works in finance.<\/p>\n<p>Turek, she added, might appeal more to the sort of Democratic voters who supported Hillary Clinton over Sen. The two candidates have acknowledged that they agree on most issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s a nickel\u2019s worth of difference there, quite frankly,\u201d said Tom Harkin, the longtime Democratic senator from Iowa who left office in 2015 and has endorsed Turek. \u201cI know them both. It has more to do with style and \u2026 what you lead with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wahls has campaigned on his support for Sanders\u2019s bill to impose a 5 percent wealth tax on billionaires. Turek doesn\u2019t bring up Sanders \u2014 but he said he also supports a wealth tax,<b> <\/b>describing himself as a \u201ccommon-sense prairie populist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At a gathering of Democrats in a living room in Osceola, Turek said he\u2019s running on three issues he believes resonate beyond the Democratic base: health care, corruption in Washington, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaenvironment.org\/newsroom\/council-news\/new-report-finds-ties-between-the-most-common-cancers-in-iowa-and-environmental-risk-factors\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.iaenvironment.org\/newsroom\/council-news\/new-report-finds-ties-between-the-most-common-cancers-in-iowa-and-environmental-risk-factors\">water contamination linked to Iowa\u2019s rising cancer rate<\/a>. He tries to avoid culture-war fights, he said, because he views them as divisive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I have a unique ability to make progressive ideas seem like common sense,\u201d Turek said afterward in the home\u2019s garage. \u201cI am very, very disciplined in terms of my messaging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some Democrats said they\u2019re supporting Turek because they think he has a better shot of winning in November.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica Dirks, 48, an education consultant who lives in Ankeny, a Des Moines suburb, said she voted early for Turek even though she may be more liberal because she thinks he can win.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s going to appeal to a wider segment of disaffected Iowa Democrats and independents,\u201d Dirks said.<\/p>\n<p>Roman Vald, 56, an attorney in Des Moines, said electability was his top priority. A former Republican, Vald said he\u2019s worried about what he described as the party\u2019s growing authoritarianism.
