Until four months ago, Spencer Pratt was best known as the churlish reality TV boyfriend from \u201cThe Hills\u201d who, for the past two decades, has stayed laser-focused on being famous. A certain cohort of late-aughts MTV viewers know way too many details about him.<\/p>

He is now a leading candidate to serve nearly 4 million people as Los Angeles mayor, on the ballot for today\u2019s so-called \u201cjungle primary.<\/a>\u201d After an influx of campaign cash<\/a> and a better-than-expected debate performance<\/a>, his long-shot, short-term campaign is <\/b>getting the <\/b>Time to Take Him Seriously media treatment. <\/b><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve been here before<\/a>, with a different reality TV candidate: President Donald Trump also had never before held public office and was initially written off by the mainstream media and party poobahs. Pratt, 42, a registered Republican running as an independent, has used the Trump playbook of trolling and insulting <\/a>his closest opponents, incumbent Karen Bass and city council member Nithya Raman. The latest polls <\/a>show the contest is tight.<\/p>\n

We \u2014 two millennials who came of age in the peak MTV reality show era \u2014 have prepared a Pratt Primer, and will take on your questions about everything, including the Mayan apocalypse and the healing crystals.<\/p>\n

Pratt, a Los Angeles native, was a student at the University of Southern California in the early 2000s when he realized the potential of the burgeoning \u201creality TV\u201d genre. So he pitched an unscripted show centered on his pal Brody Jenner, a spoiled rich kid who was constantly irritating his stepdad, Grammy-winning producer David Foster (then married to Jenner\u2019s mother, the songwriter and Elvis girlfriend Linda Thompson, who happened to be the ex-wife of Caitlyn Jenner, Brody\u2019s parent). With us so far?<\/p>\n

\u201cPrinces of Malibu,\u201d set at Foster\u2019s $40 million estate, ran for six episodes \u2014 and Foster labeled Pratt as his stepson\u2019s \u201cweaselly friend\u201d in the first few minutes<\/a> of the pilot.<\/p>\n

Well, a rumor<\/i> about a sex tape, and not his. We\u2019ll get to that in a sec.<\/p>\n

Being a prince of Malibu was nothing compared to \u201cThe Hills,\u201d the MTV reality hit from 2006 to 2010 that revolved around a group of 20-somethings trying to figure out life and love. The series followed some of the beautiful and dramatic high school kids we met in the hit \u201cLaguna Beach,\u201d including one of its stars, Lauren Conrad. Pratt made his grand entrance in Season 2 as the boyfriend of Heidi Montag, Conrad\u2019s best friend.<\/p>\n

Spencer drove a wedge between the two women as Heidi spent more time with him. Then he became public enemy No. 1 because of an explosive narrative: Lauren\u2019s belief that Heidi and Spencer started a rumor that she made a sex tape with her ex-boyfriend. While \u201cThe Hills\u201d cast has since admitted that many storylines were manipulated by producers, the hurt feelings over this situation seemed real. Lauren and Heidi\u2019s friendship imploded, leading to Lauren famously yelling<\/a> at Heidi, \u201cYou KNOW what you did!\u201d (Eventually, Spencer and Heidi got married and Lauren attended the wedding, which was featured in Season 5.)<\/p>\n

Pratt later confessed<\/a> to starting the rumor, then backtracked and said his confession was a lie. A recent Vanity Fair story<\/a> reported he maintains that he was the fall guy for the feud that boosted the profile of the show.<\/p>\n

Pratt is still married to Montag, and together they are \u201cSpeidi.\u201d In 2009, Montag famously underwent 10 plastic surgery procedures in one day<\/a> at age 23, including a chin reduction, breast augmentation and ear pinning (not televised). The couple has two children, Ryker and Gunner.<\/p>\n

Montag tried to pivot from \u201cThe Hills\u201d to a music career; she and Pratt poured their money<\/a> from the show into her 2010 debut album, \u201cSuperficial,\u201d but it only sold<\/a> about 1,000 copies its first week.<\/p>\n

Not long after, Montag announced she was dropping<\/a> Pratt as her manager in favor of a psychic. And Speidi said they were getting a divorce. But then: The split was a stunt<\/a>, they said.<\/p>\n

So much more. Speidi has parlayed their reputation as chaos agents into appearances on NBC\u2019s 2009 reality competition \u201cI\u2019m a Celebrity\u2026Get Me Out of Here!\u201d after which a network executive publicly slammed<\/a> the duo as \u201cinsincere, lazy, entitled\u201d and \u201ceverything that\u2019s wrong with America.\u201d<\/p>\n

And: WE TV\u2019s \u201cMarriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars\u201d; two seasons of the \u201cCelebrity Big Brother\u201d in the U.K.; and Fox\u2019s \u201cThe Masked Singer\u201d this year.<\/p>\n

Pratt <\/b>also became an expert in staging<\/a> and selling paparazzi photos of himself and his wife.<\/p>

Where should we begin? Pratt has a business selling crystals<\/a>, which he believes have healing powers. (In 2018, he told Dazed that he believes a $15,000 piece of sugilite crystal<\/a> alleviated his wife\u2019s plastic surgery pain.) He estimated that his personal crystal collection was worth $1 million.<\/p>\n

He and his wife also spoke about believing in a 2012 doomsday prophecy about the Mayan calendar, and spending $10 million on cars, gifts and dining out because they believed the end of the world was nigh. \u201cWe thought, we have got to spend this money before the asteroid hits,\u201d Pratt told British tabloid OK! Magazine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Pratt has also rapped on his wife\u2019s records, and once called himself the \u201cWhite Jay-Z.<\/a>\u201d He was, at one point, trying to sell a reality show about cannabis<\/a>. He really likes hummingbirds<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Pratts\u2019 family home, a $2.5 million dollar mansion in Pacific Palisades, burned down in the 2025 Los Angeles wildfires. He documented the loss on social media <\/b>(Yes, he lost much of the crystal collection<\/a>), and said his family could not afford to rebuild<\/a> despite an insurance payout. Pratt maintains that Bass\u2019s leadership contributed to the devastation and is one of more than 20 families and property owners that filed suit<\/a> against the city of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.<\/p>\n

Pratt launched his campaign on the anniversary of the wildfires, and told Vanity Fair that his initial objective was to \u201cdamage\u201d Bass \u201cas much as possible.\u201d Recently, he reposted a fan-generated AI video that cast him in the role of Batman \u2014 \u201cPrattman,\u201d if you will \u2014 and Bass, Kamala Harris and other Democrats as his enemies. It\u2019s gotten a lot of people buzzing <\/a>about how artificial intelligence will be used in campaigns.<\/p>\n

After the fire, Pratt placed an 33-foot Airstream trailer on his property, and has featured it prominently in his campaign, saying he lived there. But TMZ later reported that he was actually living at the luxurious Hotel Bel-Air. Pratt has said his security team encouraged him to leave the trailer<\/a>. He briefly revived his rap career, dropping a parody diss track<\/a> about Bass based on \u201cThe Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pratt\u2019s wife and children are living outside Los Angeles<\/a>, in Carpenteria, Calif., the LA Times reported.<\/p>\n

He has a website <\/a>for that. (Short answer: Emergency preparedness, clearing homeless encampments, reducing red tape for entrepreneurs, and city beautification, to name a few of his key ideas.)<\/p>\n

Trump thinks so. \u201cI heard he\u2019s a big MAGA person,\u201d the president recently said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But not by Pratt\u2019s account. And his personal beliefs don\u2019t align neatly with MAGA\u2019s core tenets: He supports transgender rights. He recently posted<\/a>: \u201cI don\u2019t want ICE in LA, nobody wants ICE in L.A.\u201d He has compared himself to President Barack Obama<\/a>, and identifies as a community activist. (Pratt\u2019s campaign did not respond to a request for comment on this and other topics covered in this FAQ.)<\/p>\n

However: His campaign is being run by Republican operatives, the Hollywood Reporter<\/a> reported. He told CNN that he became a Republican because of his desire to obtain a concealed weapon permit<\/a>. And he has previously voted for Trump.<\/p>\n

An array of manosphere podcasters, including Adam Carolla<\/a> and Joe Rogan<\/a>, and celebrity friends of his, including Paris Hilton and fellow \u201cHills\u201d stars Kristin Cavallari and Audrina Patridge. Dennis Quaid is reportedly rooting<\/a> for him. And David Foster has gotten over the \u201cPrinces of Malibu\u201d drama so much that he held a fundraiser for Pratt at his home. (A viral video shows<\/a> Foster playing piano as his wife, \u201cAmerican Idol\u201d star Katharine McPhee, sings a cover of Tina Turner\u2019s \u201cThe Best\u201d with revised lyrics celebrating Pratt.)<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, \u201cPrice is Right\u201d host Drew Carey deemed<\/a> Pratt a \u201cserial scammer without a soul or moral compass,\u201d while comedian Chelsea Handler recorded a video that unfavorably compared Pratt to Trump. Former \u201cReal Housewives\u201d star Lisa Rinna<\/a> said she did not support Pratt, either. \u201cI\u2019m a reality person. You wouldn\u2019t want me as mayor,\u201d she added. Jimmy Kimmel<\/a> recently ripped into Pratt on his show: \u201cYou think this guy wants to sit through city council meetings all day talking about zoning?\u201d the host asked. \u201cNo. He wants to be a star again. And guess what? It\u2019s working. He\u2019s everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI keep being called a reality star, but I\u2019m the only candidate living in reality,\u201d Pratt quipped to NBCLA<\/a>. ABC7 pressed Pratt on his connection to Alex Jones, the conspiracy theorist and InfoWars founder who hosted<\/a> the couple on his show in 2017. Pratt pushed back<\/a>, saying he\u2019s done a lot of \u201cstupid things\u201d in his life but \u201cafter they let my house burn down and my parents\u2019 house burn down, I\u2019m a different person.\u201d<\/p>
