President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he does not consider the economic impacts the war in Iran is having on Americans, remarks that quickly drew criticism from Democrats and appeared to undermine his campaign pledge of addressing voters\u2019 cost of living concerns.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot even a little bit\u201a\u201d Trump said when asked to what extent \u201cAmericans\u2019 financial situations\u201d are motivating him to reach a deal to end the war. Trump spoke to reporters on the White House South Lawn before departing for his trip to China.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only thing that matters when I\u2019m talking about Iran \u2014 they can\u2019t have a nuclear weapon. I don\u2019t think about Americans\u2019 financial situation. I don\u2019t think about anybody,\u201d Trump said. \u201cI think about one thing: we cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president doubled down on the sentiment when asked to clarify whether the economic impact on Americans was a factor in his decision-making. The U.S. inflation rate has risen to its highest rate<\/a> in nearly three years since the start of the Iran war in late February, with increased prices largely driven by higher energy costs. Gas prices rose 5.4 percent last month<\/a> and were up about 30 percent over the past year. Still, the U.S. stock market has continued to hit a series of records.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery American understands,\u201d Trump said of economic issues related to the war, referencing an unnamed poll he said showed an overwhelming majority of people \u201cunderstand that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNow if the stock market goes up or down a little bit, the American people understand,\u201d Trump continued. \u201cWhen this war is over, oil is going to drop, the stock market is going to go through the roof, and truly, I think we\u2019re in the golden age right now. You\u2019re going to see a golden age like we\u2019ve ever seen before.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s approval on economic issues, which were critical to his political comeback in 2024, has fallen since he launched the Iran war.<\/p>

A recent Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll<\/a> found that his approval rating on the economy has declined by seven points, to 34 percent, as gas prices have risen. Trump\u2019s approval on inflation has fallen five points in that time to 27 percent, and his lowest rating comes on perceptions of his handling of the general cost of living, with 23 percent of Americans approving vs. 76 percent disapproving.<\/p>\n

The poll also found that Americans disapprove of his handling of the situation with Iran by 66 percent to 33 percent.<\/p>\n

Democratic officials and campaign strategists were quick to jump on Trump\u2019s comments, with some openly musing about using them in campaign ads against Republicans during the midterms.<\/p>\n

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) shared the clip, writing on social media<\/a> that \u201cGas is over $4.60\/gallon in Pennsylvania today\u201d and Trump \u201cliterally doesn\u2019t give a damn.\u201d<\/p>\n

At another point while talking to reporters, Trump defended his economic policies, saying \u201cIf you go back to just before the war,\u201d inflation had fallen under his watch.<\/p>\n

Trump, who has expressed an interest in pausing the federal gas tax<\/a> \u2014 which would require congressional approval \u2014 said Tuesday that he would support governors doing so in their states. \u201cI think that\u2019s a great idea,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>
