The title of Jill Biden\u2019s memoir, \u201cView from the East Wing,\u201d is already a historical relic. There is no view from the East Wing now, of course, because the structure has been demolished to make way for President Donald Trump\u2019s ballroom. And much of what Biden discusses in her memoir of her time as first lady could be interpreted as an excavation, too.<\/p>

Those hoping that the memoir, released Tuesday, would provide a detailed reckoning of the Biden family\u2019s time in the White House are setting themselves up for disappointment: The former first lady defends her husband\u2019s decision to run for reelection and his capabilities as president. She would move heaven and earth for him.<\/p>\n

Some Democrats are unhappy about her decision to dredge up the 2024 campaign.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a lot of momentum in our favor \u2026 and when we get pulled back into conversations about age and the election in \u201824, it\u2019s never gonna be a good place for Democrats,\u201d Meghan Hays, a former White House aide to Joe Biden, said on C-SPAN\u2019s \u201cCeasefire.\u201d<\/a> \u201cI think it is a tough place to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jill writes that when her husband was president, \u201cI think he and I both erred on the side of silence, dignity, and letting news cycles run their course.\u201d<\/p>\n

So, now, she\u2019s ready to talk. And here\u2019s what she has to say.<\/p>\n

True to the book\u2019s title, Jill describes the view from the East Wing in rich detail: the paintings on her office walls, the books and tchotchkes in the shelves, the views of the gardens.<\/p>\n

When she learns of its destruction, her grief is immense.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe innards of the East Wing were spread out for everyone to see,\u201d Jill writes of the destruction of her former space in the White House, \u201clike a rare and precious animal that had been hunted down and killed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jill details only a few interactions with Melania Trump. After the attempt on Donald Trump\u2019s life in Butler, Pennsylvania, during the 2024 campaign, Jill says that she called Melania to say she was thinking of her and Barron, the youngest Trump child, and that Melania was \u201cpolite and controlled as ever.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jill describes an awkward motorcade ride with Melania on the day of Trump\u2019s second inauguration. When asked by fellow motorcade guest John Bessler, Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar\u2019s husband, about Barron\u2019s time at New York University, \u201cMelania kept trying to switch the topic to the weather,\u201d Jill writes.<\/p>\n

Perhaps unsurprising but Melania also snubbed Jill\u2019s 2024 invitation to the ceremonial inauguration tea and didn\u2019t offer one in 2021.<\/p>\n

Jill writes that her husband told her he wasn\u2019t feeling well the day of the 2024 presidential debate and that, even after his makeup was done, \u201che looked like he was made of clay, strangely monochromatic.\u201d When he said his line about beating Medicare, \u201cIs he short circuiting?<\/i> I thought,\u201d Jill writes. \u201cIs this a stroke? \u2026 Has he been drugged?<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTo this day, I still don\u2019t know what happened,\u201d she writes, wondering whether he had taken some codeine cough syrup for his illness. \u201cI wish I\u2019d thought of asking for a blood test.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Jill addressed a postdebate crowd with her husband and offered him reassurance \u2014 \u201cYou answered every question. You knew all the facts,\u201d she said \u2014 she now acknowledges that her comments \u201csounded a little too disconnected from what people saw.\u201d<\/p>\n

When stories alleging that President Biden\u2019s inner circle had concealed details of his cognitive decline began to circulate, she said, \u201cIt was so absurd that I couldn\u2019t imagine ever having to dignify it with a response. I never guessed that theory would take on a life of its own.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is not until Chapter 23 that Jill begins to speak about her husband\u2019s decision to seek a second term. \u201cEvery one of his senior advisers insisted he needed to run,\u201d she writes. \u201cEven if he had slowed down in the years before his reelection bid, I believed in my heart that he was still good enough and wise enough and capable enough to govern.\u201d<\/p>

She writes that when people surrounding President Biden couldn\u2019t initially persuade him to quit in the aftermath of the debate, they began to lobby her. When he finally made the decision to exit the race, she asked him how he was feeling about it. \u201cHe appeared strong and resigned. He took my hand and said, \u2018Jilly, I had no choice.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The former president\u2019s post-White House diagnosis of Stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer came as a \u201csurprise\u201d to her even though she detailed her observations of his symptoms, which included waking up frequently in the night. Jill was the one who alerted his doctors without speaking to him directly, which she acknowledged \u201csurely sounds old-fashioned,\u201d but: \u201cIt\u2019s always been the nature of our relationship that we\u2019ve maintained a veil of discretion around personal health,\u201d including her menopause symptoms.<\/p>\n

Though questions remain about how a diagnosis such as this could have been missed by White House physicians, Jill writes: \u201cI didn\u2019t want to waste too much energy looking back and asking how this could have happened. We had no time to lose.\u201d The former president\u2019s medication regime has caused side effects, including \u201cfatigue and moodiness.\u201d<\/p>\n

Biden devotes one chapter to Hunter Biden\u2019s trial, describing what it was like to go back and forth between her stepson in court and her husband in France for D-Day anniversary memorials. She writes of \u201cwilling myself to appear as much like a robot as possible.\u201d She says that her husband\u2019s attempts to remain neutral and let the process play out had backfired: \u201cIn working so hard to be impartial, we guaranteed that Hunter would meet the worst possible legal fate.\u201d<\/p>\n

When President Biden first met Willow, the Bidens\u2019 adopted cat<\/a>, he said, \u201cThat cat thinks she\u2019s a dog!\u201d Jill describes the cat\u2019s \u201cpuppy-like confidence\u201d at the White House.<\/p>\n

Notably, Jill does not mention the family\u2019s German Shepherd dogs, which had bitten Secret Service agents several times<\/a> during their White House residency. (And, on the topic of dogs, they came up during that awkward motorcade ride with Melania, when Bessler asked Melania about pets: \u201cI asked Barron several times, but he said no, he didn\u2019t want a dog,\u201d she said.)<\/p>\n

Though reporters often scrutinize the fashion choices of first ladies and what those choices communicate, Jill writes of being unnerved by this commentary, which could go too far. When she wore patterned tights, she was accused of \u201cdressing too provocatively. To me, they were just pretty lace stockings.\u201d A scrunchie worn on a different day \u201cresulted in a deluge of commentary.\u201d But she also describes some of her favorite outfits worn for official events and name-drops designers and labels, including Christian Siriano, Schiaparelli, Oscar de la Renta and Ralph Lauren.<\/p>\n

Biden writes of her deep gratitude to the Clintons, who \u201cstuck with us through the entirety of the hard summer\u201d of 2024. Hillary Clinton, she writes, is \u201cone of the greatest politicians of our time, as well as a singularly kind person.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jill expressed her distaste for Trump\u2019s use of an image of them in conversation to market his new $199 cologne, with the tagline, \u201cA fragrance your enemies can\u2019t resist.\u201d \u201cReally?\u201d she writes.<\/p>\n

But otherwise she rarely refers to Trump, and when she does, she uses the term \u201cJoe\u2019s opponent,\u201d or \u201cthe incoming president,\u201d rather than his name. Recalling her last night in the White House residence, she writes that she felt \u201canxious for what the next day would bring, as the president-elect prepared to return like some kind of avenging spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n

The first few days of what Jill refers to as \u201cthe afterlife\u201d were difficult, she writes. Now, \u201cEverywhere I go \u2014 the gym, the grocery store, the beach \u2014 I am stopped by people telling me horror stories\u201d about their lives under the Trump administration, she says.<\/p>\n

She is trying, she writes, to see this phase as \u201cone more life stage, like having a new baby or becoming an empty nester.\u201d She has taken up mah-jongg<\/a>. She closes with these words: \u201cWe are blessed.\u201d<\/p>
