President Donald Trump\u2019s medical reports no longer include a common hair-loss prevention drug that his physicians said he routinely used during his first term in office.<\/p>\n

Finasteride \u2014 also known by the brand name Propecia \u2014 is used by millions of American men to prevent male-pattern hair loss. Three of Trump\u2019s past physicians have said that he used the drug before and during his first term as president.<\/p>\n

But the drug has not appeared on Trump\u2019s medical reports since he returned to office last year, including a report<\/a> released Friday night that mentioned three other medications.<\/p>\n

White House officials declined to comment on Trump\u2019s past use of finasteride and whether he had stopped taking it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe current report reflects all medications deemed clinically relevant to disclose at this time,\u201d the White House said in a statement, adding that Trump\u2019s latest medical report included information relevant to his ability to serve as president. \u201cNo additional undisclosed conditions or procedures materially affecting his health status were omitted from this report.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s allies have mocked the persistent focus on the president\u2019s health, saying that many questions about his medication, appearance and aging are irrelevant to his performance. But Robert Klitzman, a <\/b><\/i>psychiatrist <\/b>who leads Columbia University\u2019s master\u2019s program in bioethics, said the White House\u2019s lack of transparency about Trump\u2019s use of a hair-loss drug may reflect its willingness to be honest about the nearly 80-year-old president\u2019s health.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt raises significant questions of what else is possibly not being revealed,\u201d Klitzman said.<\/p>\n

He also noted that use of finasteride has been linked with an increased risk of depression, which could affect a president\u2019s performance, adding that it was \u201ccrucial\u201d for Trump to be open about his health and medications.<\/p>\n

Arthur Caplan, who founded the bioethics program at New York University\u2019s medical school and is a longtime researcher of presidential health, said he does not trust the medical reports released by the White House, citing Trump\u2019s past efforts to conceal health information.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are obviously overdue for the appointment of an independent medical expert assessment,\u201d Caplan said.<\/p>\n

Trump, the oldest person ever to be elected president, has long faced questions<\/a> about whether he has been fully forthcoming about his health. One of Trump\u2019s former physicians previously said that Trump dictated a medical report that was released under the physician\u2019s name when Trump first sought the presidency more than a decade ago.<\/p>\n

Trump and the White House also concealed<\/a> the severity of his coronavirus infection in late 2020, among other decisions that raised questions about the administration\u2019s transparency.<\/p>\n

Trump did not release comprehensive medical results during his 2024 presidential campaign. He has visited Walter Reed National Military Medical Center three times since April 2025 amid questions about persistent bruises on his hands and swelling in his legs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Sean P. Barbabella, Trump\u2019s current physician, wrote Friday that Trump \u201cremains in excellent health<\/a>\u201d following his most recent visit to Walter Reed, according to a report released by the White House.<\/p>\n

There is a long history<\/a> of the White House not fully disclosing relevant medical information about the sitting president, including Woodrow Wilson\u2019s stroke and John F. Kennedy\u2019s significant use of painkillers.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s predecessor, President Joe Biden, was dogged by questions about his mental acuity, particularly after a rocky June 2024 debate against Trump. Biden\u2019s wife, Jill Biden, wrote in a memoir<\/a> released this week that she thought her husband needed to undergo cognitive testing after that performance. (Biden officials said at the time<\/a> they did not believe he needed such testing.)<\/p>\n

Biden, who was 82 when he left office, and Trump, who turns 80 on June 14, are the two oldest men to serve as president. <\/b>Trump has accused Biden of not having been fit to govern and said he should have undergone more cognitive testing.<\/p>\n

Physicians, medical ethicists and many politicians have said that presidents should disclose health updates, particularly when it could affect their ability to govern, in an effort to build and keep public trust.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a certain level of openness and disclosure that people have a right to expect from someone in whom they place such profound trust,\u201d said Steve Joffe, a physician and bioethicist at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine.<\/p>

Several physicians said that it is harder to determine whether presidents have an obligation to disclose that they are receiving treatment for cosmetic conditions, given their right to privacy. But Joffe said that \u201cthere isn\u2019t much downside\u201d to disclosing use of drugs such as finasteride for hair loss.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to make sure that we\u2019re getting the full story in order to know that whoever occupies a position can sufficiently carry out the responsibilities of the office,\u201d Klitzman added.<\/p>\n

Presidents are not required to release reports about their health and medications, although they have typically undergone annual checkups at Walter Reed and released key results. Past presidents have said the practice helps reassure the public that they remain fit to perform the duties of their office, and Trump has said that he is continuing that tradition.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I have an obligation to do it,\u201d Trump told the New York Post in an interview<\/a> posted Wednesday. \u201cI just came out with very, very good results.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump did not disclose his use of finasteride when he first sought the presidency. A medical summary released by his then-doctor Harold Bornstein in September 2016 did not mention the drug among Trump\u2019s medications.<\/p>\n

Finasteride, which physicians say is well-tolerated and has few significant side effects, is a common treatment for men seeking to stave off hair loss.<\/p>\n

\u201cI tell my patients it presses pause on the progressive thinning \u2014 it reduces the rate of hair loss and often maintains existing hair,\u201d said Adam Friedman, who chairs the dermatology department at the George Washington School of Medicine and Health Sciences.<\/p>\n

The drug also is used as a treatment to prevent prostate cancer. People who take finasteride report lower levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in their bloodstream, a marker of potential prostate cancer.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s PSA levels in 2016 were noticeably low, according to Bornstein\u2019s summary, sparking questions from medical experts. Bornstein subsequently told<\/a> the New York Times in early 2017 that Trump had been taking finasteride to prevent hair loss, leading to his low PSA levels.<\/p>\n

Ronny Jackson, who served as Trump\u2019s physician during a portion of his first term as president and is now a Republican congressman representing Texas, said the following year that Trump was continuing to take finasteride.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe takes Propecia, 1 milligram daily, for prevention of male-pattern hair loss,\u201d Jackson said at a White House press briefing in January 2018. He added later that Trump\u2019s use of finasteride was \u201cprobably why his PSA is as low as it is, because it\u2019s very low.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sean Conley, Trump\u2019s subsequent physician, disclosed in June 2020 that Trump was still taking the drug.<\/p>\n

Subsequent medical reports released by the Trump campaign and the current White House have not mentioned finasteride, but they have included information about Trump\u2019s PSA levels, which have remained relatively low. Still, Friedman cautioned against attempting to judge whether Trump is still using finasteride by scrutinizing his PSA levels.<\/p>\n

He also warned against making assumptions about Trump\u2019s use of medication by studying photographs of his evolving appearance. Friedman said that men can still experience hair loss while taking the drug.<\/p>\n

\u201cHair appearance alone is not a reliable way to determine whether someone is taking finasteride\u201a\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Patients who discontinue use of the drug also can see significant shedding of hair.<\/p>\n

Trump has spoken of his admiration for other men\u2019s hair while defending his own distinctive hairstyle. He has also been unhappy with past allegations that his hair is not his own or is somehow altered.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t wear a toupee. It\u2019s my hair. I swear,\u201d Trump said during an August 2015 event in South Carolina as he was first seeking the presidency. He invited one woman onstage to perform an \u201cinspection,\u201d<\/a> asking her to quickly tug on his hair.<\/p>
