TORONTO \u2014 Ernie Clement swerved to his right to dodge a tag attempt by Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson, who threw to first, assuming that the Blue Jays baserunner would be called out for leaving the baseline.<\/p>\n

Not so fast.<\/p>\n

Instead of an inning-ending double play, umpires ruled that Clement was safe, and it turned out to be the key play as Toronto rallied for a 6-4 victory<\/a> on Sunday.<\/p>\n

The Orioles led 4-1 in the sixth when Clement reached on Henderson\u2019s fielding error. With runners at first and third, Brandon Valenzuela hit a bouncer up the middle.<\/p>\n

Henderson fielded the ball<\/a> and reached out to tag Clement, who got well out of the way, and Henderson threw to first to retire Valenzuela.<\/p>\n

Second base umpire Nic Lentz ruled Clement safe, saying the runner was getting out of the way to allow Henderson to field the ball and not trying to avoid a tag.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe runner has the right to establish his base path, and so Clement had established his base path to avoid the fielder from potential interference,\u201d Lentz told a pool reporter. \u201cEven though Henderson reached out for a tag, Clement\u2019s base path was already established out there, going to the second base, so therefore it was not out of the baseline.\u201d<\/p>\n

Henderson called that decision \u201csuper frustrating.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was a new one for me,\u201d Henderson said. \u201cThat was definitely, I felt like, not a great call.\u201d<\/p>\n

Orioles manager Craig Albernaz came out to argue and said the umpires told him Henderson didn\u2019t make enough of a tag attempt.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think when you stick your glove out to tag somebody, that\u2019s an attempted tag,\u201d Albernaz said. \u201cThere\u2019s no rule about how far you have to extend your arm to tag somebody.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kazuma Okamoto, Andr\u00e9s Gim\u00e9nez and Nathan Lukes all followed with RBI hits to give Toronto the lead.<\/p>\n

Crew chief and home plate umpire Hunter Wendelstedt said Clement moving out of Henderson\u2019s path was \u201ca very gentlemanly thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was getting out of the way to allow the fielder to make the play towards first base,\u201d Wendelstedt said.<\/p>\n

Orioles right-hander Shane Baz exited after the hits from Okamoto and Gim\u00e9nez. Baz yelled at the umpires as he walked off the field.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only reason I\u2019m not going to talk about that play is because I will get fined,\u201d Baz said afterward. \u201cThat\u2019s the only reason.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Orioles were further frustrated when, in the ninth, Jackson Holliday was called out for leaving the baseline<\/a> between home and first as he tried to avoid a tag from pitcher Louis Varland.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe runner had not established his base path, and then he deviated more than three feet to avoid that tag,\u201d Wendelstedt explained. \u201cThat\u2019s when I called him out.\u201d<\/p>\n
