(Zach Boyden-Holmes\/Des Moines Register\/USA Today Network\/Imagn Images)<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Before narrowly clinching the GOP nomination for Iowa governor, Zach Lahn took a stance once unthinkable for Republicans in the Corn Belt: Big Agriculture <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.happyscribe.com\/the-shawn-ryan-show\/290-zach-lahn-inside-america-s-cancer-causing-chemical-problem\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/podcasts.happyscribe.com\/the-shawn-ryan-show\/290-zach-lahn-inside-america-s-cancer-causing-chemical-problem\">is making<\/a> Americans sick.<\/p>\n<p>The message, which aligns with Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.\u2019s Make America Healthy Again movement, helped Lahn deliver a rare defeat over a candidate endorsed by President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo many politicians from Washington, D.C., to Des Moines have had their heads stuck in the sand while Big Ag and Big Pharma printed money,\u201d Lahn said at his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5U-j-apvPMo\" rel=\"\">victory speech <\/a>after winning his June 2 primary. \u201cThis will not go on when I\u2019m governor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lahn \u2014 a businessman, sixth-generation Iowan who moved back full-time in 2023, farmer and former Montana state director for the conservative <a href=\"https:\/\/movinginsiderusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/e3705eb1ffb564e4f078b2574f4c812a.pdf\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/sites\/default\/files\/analysis\/Buying_Time\/AFP%20starts%20spending.pdf\">Americans for Prosperity<\/a> \u2014 ran a populist campaign that also appealed to conservative activists. In campaign commercials, he called for cracking down on illegal immigration and reclaiming the school \u201ccurriculum from the Marxists who hijacked it.\u201d On the trail and social media, Lahn bashed corporate interests and the D.C. establishment.<\/p>\n<p>Lahn has blamed Iowa\u2019s unusual surge in cancer in part on pesticides, the subject of extensive litigation as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/cancer-control-and-society\/articles\/10.3389\/fcacs.2024.1368086\/full#s4\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/cancer-control-and-society\/articles\/10.3389\/fcacs.2024.1368086\/full#s4\">some researchers<\/a> link long-term exposure to the chemicals to the disease.<i> <\/i>Lahn\u2019s primary opponent, Rep. Randy Feenstra, has defended pesticides as thoroughly evaluated by regulators and <a href=\"https:\/\/feenstra.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/feenstra-leads-bicameral-letter-usda-hhs-epa-maha-commission-stance-products\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/feenstra.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/feenstra-leads-bicameral-letter-usda-hhs-epa-maha-commission-stance-products\">urged a MAHA commission<\/a> chaired by Kennedy to beware of activist groups trying to discredit the products.<\/p>\n<p>Lahn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reels\/DZDQN7vTKx4\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reels\/DZDQN7vTKx4\/\">opposed<\/a> efforts to shield pesticide manufacturers from certain liability suits and Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ZachLahn\/status\/2024353836341600417?s=20\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ZachLahn\/status\/2024353836341600417?s=20\">executive order <\/a>boosting domestic production of glyphosate, the active ingredient in a commonly used weedkiller. The issues are popular with some members of Kennedy\u2019s MAHA movement, which has factions pushing for healthier foods, major changes to vaccines and eliminating environmental toxins.<\/p>\n<p>The movement \u2014 born out of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2025\/10\/15\/rfkjr-maha-support-poll\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2025\/10\/15\/rfkjr-maha-support-poll\/\">2024 political alliance<\/a> between Kennedy and Trump \u2014 has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2026\/05\/16\/ouster-rfk-jrs-allies-tests-maha-trump-alliance\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2026\/05\/16\/ouster-rfk-jrs-allies-tests-maha-trump-alliance\/\">generally aligned<\/a> itself with the GOP but has been at odds with the party\u2019s historic ties to corporate America. Lahn had discussed his run for governor with Kennedy, who was supportive, according to two people familiar with the matter<b> <\/b>who spoke on the condition of anonymity to share private conversations.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview, Lahn confirmed that he met Kennedy last summer and they talked \u201ca little bit about the race\u201d when he was considering running, but mostly about agriculture. Lahn said he called Kennedy briefly after he won the primary last week and that Kennedy was a big motivation for why he wanted to run in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe [MAHA] movement is real,\u201d Lahn said. \u201cWhether you\u2019re left or right, you don\u2019t want our kids getting sick. You want to have real food. You want to make sure your environmental toxins are minimized. And you want low cancer rates.<i>\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Kennedy praised the candidate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s a farmer, he cares deeply about the farm economy, he wants to reduce the cost of inputs which are burying American farmers,\u201d Kennedy told The Washington Post. \u201cAnd he wants to give farmers an off-ramp from chemically intensive agriculture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some Republican governors have embraced Kennedy\u2019s MAHA food agenda, including banning soda and candy in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2026\/04\/20\/candy-soda-ban-food-stamps-snap-maha\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2026\/04\/20\/candy-soda-ban-food-stamps-snap-maha\/\">food stamp program<\/a> and pushing to rid foods of artificial dyes.<\/p>\n<p>Lahn was also embraced by some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DZHBDFbtfev\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DZHBDFbtfev\/\">vaccine critics<\/a>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2023\/12\/22\/anti-vaccine-covid\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2023\/12\/22\/anti-vaccine-covid\/\">Stand for Health Freedom<\/a>, which advocates against vaccine mandates.<b> <\/b>Although the issue wasn\u2019t central to his campaign, Lahn said that he wanted to pull mRNA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radioiowa.com\/2026\/01\/31\/four-gop-candidates-for-iowa-governor-back-mrna-vaccine-ban\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.radioiowa.com\/2026\/01\/31\/four-gop-candidates-for-iowa-governor-back-mrna-vaccine-ban\/\">coronavirus shots<\/a> off the market and to end <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iowapublicradio.org\/state-government-news\/2026-02-04\/iowa-house-lawmakers-advance-bill-to-end-school-vaccine-requirements\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.iowapublicradio.org\/state-government-news\/2026-02-04\/iowa-house-lawmakers-advance-bill-to-end-school-vaccine-requirements\">vaccine requirements<\/a> to attend schools, a position that has concerned public health experts who fear a resurgence of preventable diseases. He told The Post that vaccinations shouldn\u2019t be a \u201crequirement to participate in society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lahn won the state\u2019s GOP gubernatorial primary with about 38 percent of the vote compared with the 37 percent picked up by Feenstra, whom <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116659120590376779\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116659120590376779\">Trump endorsed<\/a> days before the election. That bucks a general trend: Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Kentucky), Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-Louisiana) and Sen. John Cornyn (Texas) all lost their primaries after Trump endorsed opponents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt cannot be overstated how much of an Ag and chemical industry disruption this win is,\u201d Alex Clark, a conservative wellness influencer and podcaster aligned with the MAHA movement said in a text message. \u201cIt\u2019s unprecedented for a Republican farmer, who is anti-pesticide, to win in a farming state like Iowa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The governor\u2019s race was not purely a referendum on MAHA issues. Some preferred Lahn as an outsider and saw Feenstra as an establishment pick.<\/p>\n<p>Lahn performed best in lower-income farming counties and big cities like Des Moines, according to a Washington Post analysis of the U.S. Census Bureau\u2019s 2024 American Community Survey. Lahn and Feenstra performed about evenly in the Iowa counties with the most farmers. But income mattered: Lahn outperformed Feenstra by about 10 points in poorer farming counties, while Feenstra did best in the higher-income farming counties.<\/p>\n<p>Lahn will face Iowa State Auditor Rob Sand, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/06\/03\/trumps-pick-iowa-governor-concedes-gop-primary-upset\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/06\/03\/trumps-pick-iowa-governor-concedes-gop-primary-upset\/\">ran unopposed<\/a> in the Democratic primary, in November\u2019s general election. While Iowa has recently become a Republican stronghold that Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/elections\/results\/2024\/11\/05\/iowa-president\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/elections\/results\/2024\/11\/05\/iowa-president\/\">handily won<\/a> in 2024, this year\u2019s governor\u2019s race is widely seen as competitive.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/movinginsiderusa.com\/?p=3266\">Liberal council member advances to runoff with Bass in Los Angeles mayor\u2019s race<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Like Lahn, Sand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iowapublicradio.org\/political-news\/2026-04-30\/rob-sand-announces-water-quality-and-health-plan-with-emphasis-on-farmer-support\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.iowapublicradio.org\/political-news\/2026-04-30\/rob-sand-announces-water-quality-and-health-plan-with-emphasis-on-farmer-support\">opposes liability shields <\/a>for pesticide makers and has vowed to combat Iowa\u2019s rising cancer rates. The Democrat\u2019s campaign accused Lahn of being an \u201cout-of-state political operative\u201d due to his work with Americans for Prosperity, which generally advocates against business regulations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRob Sand has spent his career holding powerful insiders and special interests accountable, and will do the same as Iowa\u2019s next governor,\u201d Emma O\u2019Brien, Sand\u2019s deputy campaign manager, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Lahn defended his record, saying he was born and<b> <\/b>raised in Iowa and \u201calways wanted to get back home\u201d; he<b> <\/b>called Sand \u201ca career politician.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On a December video call with MAHA supporters, Lahn recalled growing up riding four-wheelers through Iowa\u2019s fields with his dad, who worked as a crop consultant. They would bring nets and catch bugs, and analyze pests and weeds for local farmers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter doing that for a few decades, he developed the exact type of lymphoma that\u2019s been implicated in the lawsuits that we\u2019ve seen,\u201d Lahn said on the call organized by MAHA Action, a political advocacy group<b> <\/b>that  issued its first state-level endorsement for him. \u201cThese have been very informative moments in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On conservative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8m5S01u7z5c\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8m5S01u7z5c\">Tucker Carlson<\/a>\u2018s podcast in February titled \u201cRising Cancer Rates, the Globalist Agenda, and the Big Business Land Grab Making You Poor,\u201d Lahn noted his dad was in remission. But he said,<b> <\/b>\u201cYour chance of getting these specific cancers linked to these products is much higher\u201d when discussing pesticides.<\/p>\n<p>For young adults in the Corn Belt, which stretches across the Midwest, cancer rates have been rising quicker than in the country as a whole, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2025\/10\/27\/young-cancer-iowa\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2025\/10\/27\/young-cancer-iowa\/\">Post analysis last year.<\/a> The six highest corn-producing states \u2014 Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana and Kansas \u2014 had the same cancer frequency as the rest of the nation for young adults and the general population in 1999. That began to diverge in the 2000s, and since 2015, the states have had a significantly higher cancer rate for those 15 to 49 years old, the analysis found.<\/p>\n<p>Some researchers have said the growing cancer rates are unlikely to be explained by one factor, and may be attributed to broader changes such as better screening, evolving environmental factors and shifts  in lifestyle patterns.<\/p>\n<p>The corporate giant Bayer has sought legal immunity from lawsuits filed by thousands alleging Roundup products cause non-Hodgkin lymphoma.<b> <\/b>The industry has stood behind the safety of the products and said they are evaluated by federal regulators through a rigorous process.<\/p>\n<p>Lahn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zachlahn.com\/policy\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.zachlahn.com\/policy\">has called for<\/a> breaking up the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5U-j-apvPMo\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5U-j-apvPMo\">Big Ag cartels<\/a>\u201d by pursuing antitrust suits against monopolies and to \u201cconduct independent state safety tests on products used in Iowa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the interview, he said he would aim to help farmers find affordable ways to reduce the use of chemicals, such as regenerative farming and rotational grazing programs.<\/p>\n<p>While MAHA champions view Lahn\u2019s win as a boon for their causes, their nascent movement has been tested in recent months with frustration spilling out on social media. Trump officials have increasingly swapped out some of Kennedy\u2019s handpicked deputies, leaving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2026\/05\/16\/ouster-rfk-jrs-allies-tests-maha-trump-alliance\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2026\/05\/16\/ouster-rfk-jrs-allies-tests-maha-trump-alliance\/\">some allies<\/a> to worry that Kennedy\u2019s influence is being diminished.<\/p>\n<p>Tony Lyons, a close ally of Kennedy who leads MAHA political advocacy groups, has pledged to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2026\/02\/26\/rfk-maha-vaccines-midterms\/\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2026\/02\/26\/rfk-maha-vaccines-midterms\/\">raise $100 million<\/a> to elect MAHA-friendly Republicans in the midterms. But it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2026\/05\/16\/ouster-rfk-jrs-allies-tests-maha-trump-alliance\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2026\/05\/16\/ouster-rfk-jrs-allies-tests-maha-trump-alliance\/\">difficult to discern<\/a> how much he  raised among the web of groups he runs. Campaign finance documents show the groups spent nearly $650,000 to help Rep. Julia Letlow (R) win  the Senate primary over Cassidy in Louisiana; he had aimed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2026\/03\/23\/casey-means-surgeon-general-nomination-stalled-maha\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2026\/03\/23\/casey-means-surgeon-general-nomination-stalled-maha\/\">spend $1 million.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lyons declined to share how much money the MAHA PAC had spent supporting Lahn.
