President Donald Trump on Tuesday night appeared to defend his latest military strikes on Iran by posting<\/a> a short clip from \u201cThe West Wing,\u201d the popular NBC television drama about a fictional U.S. president, in which the show\u2019s characters debate their own military action.<\/p>\n

In real life, the U.S. military earlier Tuesday launched a new round of strikes<\/a> after Iranian forces downed a U.S. Army helicopter. Trump said retaliation was \u201cnecessary,\u201d and military officials characterized the strikes as \u201ca proportional response to recent attacks on U.S. forces and international commercial ships transiting regional waters.\u201d<\/p>\n

The clip that Trump shared comes from a Season 1 episode of \u201cThe West Wing\u201d titled \u201cA Proportional Response.\u201d The episode, which originally aired in October 1999, centers on what action the U.S. president should take after the Syrian government downs a U.S. military plane, with his aides recommending the U.S. strike military targets of equivalent value in Syria.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is the virtue of a proportional response?\u201d President Josiah \u201cJed\u201d Bartlet \u2014 portrayed throughout the series by actor Martin Sheen \u2014 asks his aides, growing steadily agitated by their answers and arguing that such strikes would be predictable. \u201cIf it\u2019s what we do, if it\u2019s what we\u2019ve always done, don\u2019t they know we\u2019re going to do it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt isn\u2019t virtuous, Mr. President. It\u2019s all there is, sir,\u201d Adm. Percy Fitzwallace, played by actor John Amos, finally concedes.<\/p>

Bartlet then says that the United States should engage in a \u201cdisproportional response\u201d to Syria\u2019s military action to deter foreign aggression.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet the word ring forth from this time and this place, gentlemen \u2014 you kill an American, any American, we don\u2019t come back with a proportional response. We come back with total disaster!\u201d the fictional president says.<\/p>\n

Trump posted the \u201cWest Wing\u201d clip twice on his Truth Social platform, in one case alongside a post<\/a> from U.S. Central Command announcing the strikes on Iran.<\/p>\n

Trump did not share other scenes from the episode, which concludes with Bartlet opting for the proportional response he initially dismissed after realizing that carrying out a \u201cdisproportional response\u201d would lead to many civilian deaths.<\/p>
