Ecuador lost to Ivory Coast<\/a> 1-0 on Sunday in Philadelphia. Brazil drew<\/a> 1\u20131 with Morocco on Saturday, and Paraguay was routed<\/a> 4\u20131 by tournament co-host the United States.<\/p>\n

Comments from coaches after the underwhelming results struck a similar tone.<\/p>\n

Ecuador coach Sebasti\u00e1n Beccacece called it a \u201cvery painful situation.\u201d Paraguay coach Gustavo Alfaro referred to his team\u2019s loss as a \u201cvery painful lesson.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coach Carlo Ancelotti said five-time World Cup champion Brazil cannot lose heart: \u201cYou don\u2019t win a World Cup based on your first match.\u201d<\/p>\n

Uruguay plays its first game Monday against Saudi Arabia, defending champion Argentina takes on Algeria on Tuesday and Colombia is against Uzbekistan on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

South America has a proud soccer tradition, and is the only continent other than Europe to produce World Cup champions.<\/p>\n

The slow start to the tournament of some South American nations contrasts to a solid opening performance by North American teams on home soil.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe U.S. won this match very clearly and fairly,\u201d Alfaro said after Paraguay\u2019s opening loss. \u201cThey dominated tactically, technically and physically as well. They have answers to everything you throw at them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adding to the victory by the U.S., Mexico kicked off the World Cup<\/a> with a 2-0 win over South Africa, and Canada earned its first World Cup point<\/a> after a 1-1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina.<\/p>\n

Ecuador, making its fifth World Cup appearance and aiming to reach the knockout round for the second time, was playing a virtual home game at Philadelphia Stadium, where most of the capacity crowd of 68,274 wore the team\u2019s yellow jerseys.<\/p>\n

But La Tri saw its 19-game unbeaten streak end with its first loss since a 1-0 defeat to Brazil in September 2024.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m very sorry we did not give our fans the joy they came to seek,\u201d Beccacece said. \u201cIt was an unfair defeat, played out in a fantastic stadium atmosphere. We have to process it, put what happened behind us, focus on what lies ahead, and \u2014 I believe\u2014 keep the faith.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ecuador captain Enner Valencia said the team remains hopeful despite the loss.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re keeping our heads held high knowing that this is just the beginning,\u201d he said, \u201cand there\u2019s still a tournament ahead of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the game, Ecuador goalkeeper Hernan Galindez spoke about the unpredictability of the World Cup opening games and how they shouldn\u2019t necessarily be a marker of the tournament\u2019s finishing results.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the last World Cup, we won the first game and then were left out,\u201d he said. \u201cArgentina, in the last World Cup, lost the first game and won the World Cup, so nothing guarantees you anything.\u201d<\/p>\n
