Before they dipped into their vast personal fortunes and began lodging nasty allegations against each other, the current and former representatives from Maryland\u2019s most competitive U.S. House District were friendly.<\/p>\n

Now the two Democrats are waging what\u2019s among the most expensive House primary races in American history, for a seat in one of the country\u2019s least popular<\/a> political institutions.<\/p>\n

The more than $33 million public brawl, rife with accusations of deceit, will come to an end Tuesday when voters in the state head to the polls.<\/p>\n

The two candidates have fought over whether Hillary Clinton endorsed either of them and whether one had a real or imagined connection to Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis\u2019s restrictive views on abortion.<\/p>\n

She accused him of meanness and stealing her campaign manager; he\u2019s accused her of taking special interest money.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s been a lot of absurdities,\u201d Rep. April McClain Delaney, the incumbent, said in an interview where she speculated that former congressman David Trone staged a comeback bid against her because he\u2019s \u201ca bored billionaire.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trone said boredom had nothing to do with it.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I felt the congresswoman was doing a good job in representing the district and the Democratic Party, I would definitely have not run,\u201d Trone said in an interview.<\/p>\n

He then launched into a list of her votes that he would have not taken were he still in Congress \u2014 and had he not lost his $60 million self-financed bid for the Senate two years ago.<\/p>\n

Both McClain Delaney, whose husband\u2019s Forbright Bank went public<\/a> earlier this month in a $900 million public offering, and Trone, co-founder of national liquor retailer Total Wine & More, live outside the congressional district \u2014 in Potomac, the wealthy suburb north of D.C.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s represented Maryland\u2019s western-most congressional district for two years; he for six before her. They had endorsed each other, donated to each other, campaigned alongside each other, even hugged each other outside of precincts.<\/p>\n

But now, two years and at least one cease-and-desist letter later on the eve of Tuesday\u2019s primary election, they can\u2019t even agree whether they were ever really friends.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis race is the weirdest thing I\u2019ve ever worked on,\u201d a campaign staffer in one camp said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to speak candidly.<\/p>\n

McClain Delaney considers Trone\u2019s sister-in-law one of her good friends, and said she knew Trone\u2019s wife, June, well before the Trones split up.<\/p>\n

Trone says he and the Delaneys don\u2019t run in the same social circles and were only politically aligned before \u2014 including when McClain Delaney\u2019s husband, John Delaney, helped Trone win his first election to Congress. (Delaney held the seat previously but left in 2020 to run for president.)<\/p>\n

\u201cTheir social circle is the country clubs of Maryland. I don\u2019t belong to any country clubs. I don\u2019t own a pair of golf clubs,\u201d Trone said.<\/p>\n

Each are primarily self-funding their campaigns, with Trone investing $25 million to McClain Delaney\u2019s $7.4 million.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s such a freakin\u2019 waste,\u201d McClain Delaney said. \u201cThis campaign has been about money. It\u2019s been about yelling and bullying people who did not endorse him,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Trone has said it\u2019s the people\u2019s seat, and McClain Delaney is not entitled to keep it because she won it once.<\/p>

And he said he\u2019s challenging her for voting<\/a> for the Laken Riley Act that empowered ICE to detain people without criminal records, and for voting<\/a> for a provision that made it more expensive for female service members to pay for out-of-state abortions \u2014 votes other Democrats in the Maryland delegation did not take.<\/p>\n

He self-funded his campaign \u2014 and prior runs \u2014 because it insulates him from special interests, he said, before bringing up a $500,000 ad buy from a super PAC aligned with cryptocurrency interests that helped McClain Delaney.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one\u2019s arguing that they\u2019re not millionaires \u2014 or billionaires \u2014 yet they\u2019re still taking all the PAC money, taking all the lobbyist money,\u201d Trone said of his opponent.<\/p>\n

McClain Delaney\u2019s campaign declined to offer an estimate of the couple\u2019s net worth after the bank\u2019s sale.<\/p>\n

Aside from her self-funding, McClain Delaney, who was a telecom lawyer and worked for the Commerce Department during the Biden administration, has raised about $1 million in outside money. Roughly 3 in 10 dollars of that came from various PACs.<\/p>\n

Trone is just angry that he lost his Senate bid and that other Maryland leaders such as Gov. Wes Moore (D) and Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D) endorsed her, she said. \u201cThis is about his retribution tour,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Several of the Trone-era staffers McClain Delaney inherited, including her chief of staff, jumped ship to work for Trone when he declared his candidacy.<\/p>\n

Asked whether he thought McClain Delaney had done anything admirable during the campaign, Trone responded that anyone who volunteers to put themselves in public service deserves admiration.<\/p>\n

But asked the same thing about Trone, McClain Delaney spent three-plus minutes listing grievances.<\/p>\n

Trone, meanwhile, dismissed McClain Delaney\u2019s attacks \u2014 on his motivations, on his ads \u2014 as a distraction from her record.<\/p>\n

The campaign\u2019s first controversy began when Trone sent out ads \u201cfrom the desk of Congressman David Trone.\u201d McClain Delaney sent him a cease-and-desist letter.<\/p>\n

\u201cWaste of my time, silly controversy,\u201d Trone said. \u201cWhen you\u2019re a congressman, you\u2019re a \u2018congressman\u2019 for life. President Obama \u2014 he\u2019s called \u2018president\u2019 for life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then there were the DeSantis ads McClain Delaney put $1.3 million behind, using footage of Trone appearing alongside the Florida governor to discuss their shared views on putting term limits in the U.S. Constitution.<\/p>\n

Her ads said Trone was \u201ccalling for a constitutional convention empowering the radical right to put anti-choice, anti-LGBTQ+ amendments into the Constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce you have a constitutional convention, all things are open, everything is on the table,\u201d McClain Delaney said in the interview. \u201cEven calling for it is an incredibly crazy thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trone, who donated to establish an abortion clinic in Western Maryland, said suggesting he\u2019s trying to overthrow abortion rights is \u201cjust a boldface lie.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve known Governor Ron DeSantis for 12 minutes: six minutes on CNN, six minutes on Fox,\u201d he said. \u201cIn business, if you did those type of behaviors, well, you\u2019d be a Donald Trump.\u201d<\/p>
