The Republican nominee for New York governor prompted outrage among Democrats after saying that a Jewish congressional candidate \u201cwould be a camp guard in the concentration camp if he could.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bruce Blakeman, who will face off in November against Gov. Kathy Hochul (D), took aim in a Newsmax interview at Brad Lander over his views on Israel. Lander, who has called Israel\u2019s war on Gaza a \u201cgenocide,\u201d emerged Tuesday as the Democratic nominee for a New York congressional seat.<\/p>\n

Lander, in his victory speech, said that he will be \u201cone of the Jewish members of Congress most willing to stand up for Palestinian human rights.\u201d He has called for ending all American aid to Israel, including defense funding for Israel\u2019s Iron Dome missile defense system.<\/p>\n

Both Lander and Blakeman are Jewish.<\/p>\n

\u201cBrad Lander, he\u2019s a disgrace. He\u2019s anti-American, he\u2019s antisemitic. Even though he\u2019s Jewish, this guy would be a camp guard in the concentration camp if he could,\u201d Blakeman said in a Wednesday night appearance on Newsmax.<\/p>\n

Outgoing Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-New York), who is also Jewish, described<\/a> Blakeman\u2019s comments a \u201cgrotesque desecration of the memory of 6 million Jews.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor Bruce Blakeman to invoke the Holocaust to smear a fellow Jewish man is beyond the pale,\u201d Nadler said.<\/p>\n

Hochul urged Blakeman to apologize for what she said were \u201cabsolutely despicable\u201d comments.<\/p>

Lander denounced the remark as \u201cfar-right MAGA bigotry\u201d and defended his Jewish identity, saying that he named his son after Warsaw ghetto uprising leader Marek Edelman.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know where Bruce Blakeman went to Hebrew school, but I was taught that \u2018Never Again!\u2019 means never again to anyone,\u201d Lander said in a statement. \u201cStanding up for Palestinian human rights doesn\u2019t make me any less proud to be Jewish, or any less serious about fighting antisemitism.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a statement issued Thursday, Blakeman continued his criticism of Lander, saying<\/a> \u201cmaybe camp guard was too strong, but certainly collaborator.\u201d<\/p>\n

J Street, a liberal Jewish organization that describes itself as \u201cpro-Israel, pro-peace,\u201d condemned the comments as \u201ccorrosive and wrong\u201d in a post on X<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Lander is one of three congressional candidates in New York City backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, who won contested Democratic primaries. The other two are Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier.<\/p>\n

Lander ran to the left of incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman (D), whom he defeated in the Democratic primary fight for New York\u2019s 10th Congressional District.<\/p>
