A book released this week from two veteran White House reporters gives a revelatory look into the inner machinations of President Donald Trump\u2019s office as he sought to consolidate and project power, take unprecedented legal risks, and transform the nature of the presidency during the first year of his second term as commander in chief \u2014 with even fewer constraints.<\/p>

The book, \u201cRegime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump,\u201d from New York Times White House correspondents Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan, describes what they say are the behind-the-scenes moments that led to the president\u2019s decisions to launch a war in the Middle East, relentlessly pursue retribution against a string of his perceived enemies, and dramatically transform the federal government.<\/p>\n

\u201cRegime Change,\u201d released Tuesday, also has bucked a trend of books about Trump seeing sluggish sales<\/a> and has driven conversations across Washington. The publisher has had to order 150,000 additional copies after 150,000 were sold by the end of the first day of sales, said Julia Prosser, Simon & Schuster\u2019s director of publicity.<\/p>\n

Here are some of book\u2019s alleged revelations about Trump\u2019s turbulent year you may not have heard about:<\/p>\n

An email from the Office of Personnel Management to hundreds of thousands of federal workers about a month after Trump\u2019s inauguration is said to have proved to become a major fissure between Musk \u2014 whom Trump had chosen to lead the U.S. DOGE Service \u2014 and his administration.<\/p>\n

The email \u2014 with the subject line \u201cWhat did you do last week?\u201d \u2014 directed federal employees to outline within 48 hours five things they had accomplished in the previous week. A lack of a response, Musk wrote on X, would be seen as a resignation.<\/p>\n

Senior staff at the White House, the book reports, were \u201cin the dark about what Musk was doing,\u201d White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles \u201cwas livid\u201d and Cabinet members were \u201cagitated or enraged.\u201d<\/p>\n

The White House and representatives for Musk did not immediately respond to a request for comment on this passage.<\/p>\n

Haberman and Swan outline how they say Witkoff, a former attorney and real estate investor named Trump\u2019s Middle East envoy, built a diplomatic back channel with Russia.<\/p>\n

Though Keith Kellogg, a retired lieutenant general, was initially selected to serve as Trump\u2019s special envoy in Ukraine at the start of his second term, the book says the president quickly turned his sights to Witkoff for communications with Russia about the war. Trump allegedly told Kellogg \u201che was not to talk to the Russians.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody on your team can talk to these people because we\u2019re working on a deal,\u201d Trump reportedly said during an Oval Office meeting, effectively giving his job as special envoy to Witkoff.<\/p>\n

Witkoff, the book says, was reportedly in touch with Kirill Dmitriev, the head of Russia\u2019s sovereign wealth fund, as a back channel to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman endorsed Dmitriev as a back channel and also offered to facilitate talks with the Russians, the book says.<\/p>\n

After meeting with Putin, Witkoff reportedly told Trump \u201cthat Putin had said he had been so upset on the day of the attempt on Trump\u2019s life that he had gone to Mass to pray.\u201d They also report that \u201cas a gift, Putin had commissioned a portrait of Trump from that day in Butler \u2014 his face streaked in blood, his fist raised.\u201d<\/p>\n

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the book\u2019s characterization of Witkoff\u2019s role.<\/p>\n

Vexed by the Federal Reserve, Trump toyed with firing Jerome H. Powell from his position as chair of the Fed\u2019s Board of Governors in his first term before advisers talked him out of it, according to the book. In Trump\u2019s second term, however, a close aide at the time told the reporters that Trump decided he was not going to fire Powell, \u201che\u2019s just going to torture him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last summer in the Oval Office, Trump said \u201cit\u2019s so fucking ridiculous\u201d that Powell kept interest rates high, according to the book. \u201cWhat about that fucking building? Can we stop it? Can we stop construction? I just want to bust his fucking balls,\u201d Trump reportedly said during the meeting, referring to the Federal Reserve headquarters renovation underway in D.C.<\/p>

White House spokesman Kush Desai, in a statement to The Washington Post, defended Trump, saying that he \u201crightfully called out the Federal Reserve\u2019s track record of failure.\u201d The Federal Reserve declined to comment.<\/p>\n

As Trump took bigger risks in his second term, including many unpopular with voters and his own base, he cared less about polling, Haberman and Swan write.<\/p>\n

Behind the scenes, according to the book, some Trump aides told Haberman and Swan they wished the president had been more anxious about \u201cthe dangers he was courting, and about his plunging poll numbers\u201d \u2014 the unpopular war in Iran, the Epstein files, tariffs and the affordability crisis.<\/p>\n

But, \u201cto the extent he still cared about polling at all, he was seeing far fewer polls than during his first term,\u201d the authors write. His advisers know that Trump is \u201cnot receptive\u201d to being briefed on those harsh realities. \u201cMore than ever before as President, he was operating on pure gut instinct,\u201d they write.<\/p>\n

Desai, responding to The Post about the claims regarding the president\u2019s indifference to polling, said that \u201cthe most important poll occurred in 2024,\u201d when Trump was elected.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe President does not make \u2026 important decisions based on fluid, and long discredited, opinion polls, but on what is best for the American people,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

In June 2024, two senior OpenAI executives, Greg Brockman and Brad Lightcap, gave Trump \u2014 whom the authors describe as \u201cnot into AI\u201d and someone who \u201chad only begun sending text messages in 2022\u201d \u2014 a demonstration of ChatGPT, according to the book.<\/p>\n

But after watching ChatGPT instantly summarize an executive order on AI policy into a sentence where every word started with the same letter and then turn it into a poem, Trump reportedly said: \u201cThose words it\u2019s using. They\u2019re beautiful.\u201d The authors write that the president \u201cwas hooked\u201d and \u201ccaptivated by the masters of this new universe.\u201d<\/p>\n

After sitting for a candlelight donor dinner in April 2025, Trump and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang grew their \u201cmind meld,\u201d the authors call it, as the U.S. gave near \u201cfree rein to the AI industry in one of the biggest bets of his presidency,\u201d Haberman and Swan write.<\/p>\n

Trump administration officials would \u201cwould quietly marvel at just how influential Huang appeared to be with the President,\u201d they report.<\/p>\n

The White House and OpenAI, which operates ChatGPT, did not immediately respond to The Post\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n

Haberman and Swan report they sat down with Trump in the Oval Office on the 17th day of the U.S. war with Iran to discuss the reporting in their book. By then 13 American service members and thousands of Iranians had been killed.<\/p>\n

Looking at images of maple trees on the Resolute Desk, Trump said he was ordering trees for the White House. He then showed the reporters another printout with the headline \u201c339 billion all-time views\u201d of Trump\u2019s TikToks \u2014 to which he asked them, \u201cCan you believe it?\u201d White House Communications Director Steven Cheung reportedly told them: \u201cThe numbers are out of control after the operation,\u201d referring to the war with Iran.<\/p>\n

A White House official said in a statement to The Post that the president \u201cremains focused on keeping the American people safe, lowering costs for American families, and making this country greater than ever before \u2014 including the beautification of the White House and our nation\u2019s capital.\u201d<\/p>
