President Donald Trump spent Sunday morning touring several of his Washington construction projects \u2014 inspecting a park<\/a> across from the White House, walking the grounds of a golf course<\/a> he hopes to expand, and taking his motorcade on a slow drive around the traffic circle where he plans to build<\/a> a 250-foot triumphal arch. He also visited fountains and statues that his administration has worked to clean up.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are truly beautiful, even nicer than the day they were built,\u201d Trump wrote in a 589-word Truth Social post<\/a> announcing even more work.<\/p>\n

Sunday was emblematic of a broader trend: Trump has been mentioning his construction and beautification projects more than ever, a Washington Post analysis found. Trump invoked projects such as his planned White House ballroom<\/a>, renovations to the Lincoln Memorial\u2019s Reflecting Pool<\/a> and <\/b>the <\/b>restoration of Washington\u2019s fountains on four out <\/b>of every five days in June, according to The Post\u2019s review of Trump\u2019s speeches, interviews, social media posts and other public remarks.<\/p>\n

That is up from about one-third of the days in January and an eighth of days last June.<\/p>\n

For the past three months, Trump has talked about his construction projects at a greater frequency than topics such as health care and wages, <\/b>and about as often as he has talked about inflation and prices.<\/p>\n

The president\u2019s fixation on China \u2014 which he mentioned on 60 percent of days in April 2025 as he wrestled<\/a> with Chinese leaders over his tariffs and other economic issues \u2014 has also fallen behind his mentions of fountains, statues and other Washington-area projects.<\/p>\n

Trump also has repeatedly visited sites, such as the Reflecting Pool and the ballroom project<\/a>, to personally examine them. He has shown off the changes to reporters in news conferences and touted them to other leaders<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Some of Trump\u2019s recent fixation on Washington construction projects has been driven by his preparations for the city\u2019s role in celebrating the nation\u2019s 250th anniversary on July 4.<\/p>\n

The Post\u2019s analysis includes the president\u2019s speeches, remarks and text-based posts, and does not capture the president\u2019s posts on social media featuring uncaptioned photos or renderings of his various projects.<\/p>\n

Asked about Trump\u2019s focus on construction and renovation projects, the White House stressed the importance of improving the nation\u2019s capital. The administration also touted the president\u2019s work on other priorities, such as enacting tax cuts and reducing illegal immigration.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Trump remains laser-focused on lowering costs for working families, keeping the American people safe, and making this country greater than ever before \u2014 including the long-overdue beautification of our nation\u2019s capital,\u201d White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Political strategists said there is a simple explanation for the president\u2019s predilection for construction projects: Trump, a real estate magnate turned politician, has long preferred<\/a> these sorts of initiatives.<\/p>

\u201cIt\u2019s where he is the most comfortable,\u201d said Frank Luntz, a pollster and political communications expert who advises Republicans. \u201cHe goes back to it often because it\u2019s where he excels.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some of Trump\u2019s advisers have urged him to focus more on topics such as drug pricing, the cost of living and other everyday concerns for Americans ahead of the midterms \u2014 particularly given public <\/b>opposition to many of the president\u2019s projects.<\/p>\n

Most Americans oppose Trump\u2019s planned arch, with 52 percent against it and 21 percent in favor, according to a Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll conducted in April<\/a>. Fifty-six percent of Americans also opposed Trump\u2019s decision to demolish the East Wing to make way for his planned ballroom, while 28 percent supported it, the poll found.<\/p>\n

Most of the projects have also prompted lawsuits that Trump has ridiculed or dismissed in public remarks. Several military veterans<\/a> say Trump\u2019s towering arch would alter visitors\u2019 experience of nearby Arlington National Cemetery. Historic preservation and advocacy organizations have also sued to stop the president\u2019s ballroom, his changes to the Reflecting Pool, his overhaul of the Kennedy Center and other projects.<\/p>\n

Democrats have seized on Trump\u2019s fixation on construction projects, running ads that accuse him of being too focused on \u201cvanity projects\u201d and not focused enough on the problems of Americans.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany Americans are struggling with the rising costs of gas, groceries, and health care,\u201d Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-Texas) wrote in a May fundraising email. \u201cAt the same time, the Trump administration has spent millions repainting the historic Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool blue under a questionable, no-bid federal contract.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump rarely mentioned his plans for Washington construction during the early months of his second term, and when he did, he qualified them as less important than other priorities.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust inspected the site of the new Ballroom that will be built, compliments of a man known as Donald Trump,\u201d Trump wrote<\/a> on Truth Social in June 2025. \u201cThese are the \u2018fun\u2019 projects I do while thinking about the World Economy, the United States, China, Russia, and lots of other Countries, places, and events.\u201d<\/p>\n

His emphasis on the projects intensified after he demolished the White House\u2019s East Wing annex in October to clear space to build his ballroom. The president has increasingly rolled out more initiatives and defended them in his public remarks. A Post analysis conducted<\/a> in April found that Trump had mentioned the ballroom alone on about one-third of days by that point in 2026.<\/p>\n

The Justice Department has also filed several<\/a> unusual briefs in the ballroom litigation, with pages of language matching Trump\u2019s own remarks about his construction projects. Asked whether Trump dictated the briefs, which so closely resemble his own rhetoric, the White House and the Justice Department did not deny it.<\/p>\n

Those were not included in The Post\u2019s analysis of how frequently the president mentions his construction projects.<\/p>
