As the NHL’s all-team leading scorer and a Stanley Cup champion in Washington, and with his 41st birthday looming before the 2026-27 season begins, Ovechkin had a decision to make.

Read more Tiger Woods’ hospital records will be handed over to prosecutors in Florida DUI case, judge rules

On Thursday, Ovechkin finally decided: He’s coming back.

“I’m back!” Ovechkin said in a statement. “Thank you to everyone for giving me and my family the time to make this decision. I’m healthy. I love playing hockey and competing to win. I’m excited to come back and join my teammates so we can fight for a playoff spot and have a chance to win. See you in September, DC!”

The Capitals signed Ovechkin to a one-year contract worth $4.25 million, a number that fit perfectly into Washington’s remaining salary cap space after the team made a flurry of moves over the past two weeks.

The contract also includes a $4.75 million performance bonus that Ovechkin can earn at 10 games played. The NHL’s collective bargaining agreement allows performance bonuses, if they exceed that year’s salary cap, to be applied as an overage the next year. That wrinkle let Washington fit Ovechkin into its salary cap picture for this season while keeping his total compensation in line with what he’s earned for most of his career.

“Our entire organization is thrilled that Alex has decided to continue playing,” Capitals General Manager Chris Patrick said in a statement. “Alex has proven year after year that he can produce offensively and that he is still the driving force of our team. We are excited about the additions we made this offseason to bolster our lineup and make our group more competitive.

“We believe that our roster is well balanced and will help create more opportunities for Alex to create offense and score goals. In addition, his presence in our locker room — especially with our young players — will continue to be an enormous boost for our organization and will help shape our team culture for years to come.”

Read more House Democrats warn Pulte on election intelligence

To reshape the roster and shore up areas of need, Washington traded for top-six forwards Jordan Kyrou and Alex Tuch, then signed center Boone Jenner and defenseman Vincent Desharnais in free agency Wednesday. All four moves gave the Capitals experienced NHL talent in key positions, and it didn’t take Ovechkin long, after seeing the players Washington added, to decide to return for at least one more season.

Ovechkin led Washington in goals and points last year, with 32 goals and 64 points while playing all 82 games, while averaging more than 17 minutes of ice time per game — the fourth most among the Capitals’ forwards.

Washington Coach Spencer Carbery had hoped to be able to decrease Ovechkin’s minutes somewhat, aiming for a quality-over-quantity approach for the 40-year-old, but the Capitals’ offense sputtered at times and necessitated a heavier dose of Ovechkin. That led to times when Ovechkin slowed down and went through scoring droughts, looking more like an average 40-year-old NHL player, if there is such a thing, than an elite scorer.

But with the moves the Capitals made, the rebalanced forward lines should enable Ovechkin to play less while still being on a line with other talented offensive players who can help him score. At 41, neither Ovechkin nor Washington can expect him to be impactful while having to play first-line minutes. With the additions of Tuch and Kyrou, he shouldn’t have to.

Ovechkin also was clear in April, after the Capitals missed the playoffs, that if he were to come back, he would require assurances that Washington would be a contender. Patrick and the rest of the Capitals’ front office made additions to the roster that, on paper, make Washington a better team — and a team with which Ovechkin wants to try to win one more Stanley Cup.

Read more Colorado governor fires board members who criticized release of election denier

This is a developing story and will be updated.

The 40-year-old captain entered the offseason facing the end of his contract and weighing the possibility of retirement from the NHL.

[1

post-6069","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-interesting
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
