J\u00fcrgen Klopp has confirmed he\u2019s in negotiations to take over as Germany coach<\/a> and says he\u2019s \u201crecharged\u201d the energy he was missing when he left Liverpool.<\/p>

Klopp is the German soccer federation\u2019s preferred candidate after Julian Nagelsmann resigned Friday, four days after Germany lost on penalties<\/a> to Paraguay in the World Cup<\/a> round of 32.<\/p>\n

\u201cJulian has stepped down and the (federation) is working on the succession and has approached me in the course of those considerations,\u201d said Klopp, speaking from New York on German broadcaster Magenta TV in his role as a World Cup commentator late Friday.<\/p>\n

Klopp was the only coach named in a federation statement on the team\u2019s future, which said Klopp had \u201csignaled his willingness\u201d to take over.<\/p>\n

Klopp said talks would take time because of his current contract as head of global soccer for Red Bull’s network<\/a> of clubs.<\/p>\n

Klopp hasn\u2019t coached since he left Liverpool in 2024, saying<\/a> at the time he was \u201crunning out of energy\u201d after eight years with the club where he won the Premier League and Champions League.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbout two years ago I stopped at Liverpool and said that I lacked the energy for another job or for another year with Liverpool. Since then I\u2019m more than recharged, I\u2019m ready,\u201d he said.<\/p>

Germany\u2019s next coach will need to make sweeping changes and he said he would need \u201cintensive talks\u201d with the federation to agree on the key points of how to transform the team\u2019s fortunes.<\/p>\n

It was the third men\u2019s World Cup in a row that Germany has not reached the round of 16. Germany hasn\u2019t won a knockout game since beating Argentina in the 2014 final.<\/p>\n

Klopp said Nagelsmann was an \u201cexcellent coach\u201d and not to blame for the team\u2019s deeper problems.<\/p>\n

\u201cGerman soccer is obviously at a turning point now,\u201d Klopp said. \u201cNow we need to change things fundamentally. Whether that\u2019s me in the end or whoever it may be, that doesn\u2019t change the fact that changes are necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n

Klopp has had a high-profile presence as a pundit on German TV at the World Cup, even taking part in postgame interviews with Nagelsmann at the side of the field. In the immediate aftermath of the Paraguay loss, he said he hadn\u2019t thought about taking on the Germany job.<\/p>
