(Simon Barber\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The 1986 World Cup, hosted by Mexico, is one of the tournament\u2019s most iconic editions, mostly because it served as the backdrop to Argentine superstar Diego Maradona\u2019s infamous \u201cHand of God\u201d goal.<\/p>\n<p>But to Mexicans \u2014 and graphic designers across the continent \u2014 the event was iconic for something else: its distinctive logo, which became an enduring symbol of Mexican design and was later <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FIFAWorldCup\/status\/1168574809112006661?s=20\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FIFAWorldCup\/status\/1168574809112006661?s=20\">voted<\/a> the \u201cgreatest emblem\u201d of any World Cup in a survey held by FIFA, global soccer\u2019s governing body.<\/p>\n<p>Forty years later, as Mexico hosts its third World Cup, alongside the United States and Canada, Mexicans and designers remember the design with nostalgia and pride. (Jordan Teller\/ISI Photos\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAwful\u201d is how Chris Creamer of SportsLogos.net, a Canadian site dedicated to the study of sports logos, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sportslogosnet\/status\/1659038761513021441?s=20\" rel=\"\">described<\/a> it. The art and design blog Creative Bloq simply <a href=\"https:\/\/www.creativebloq.com\/news\/fifa-2026-logo?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"\">declared<\/a> that \u201cgraphic design isn\u2019t FIFA\u2019s passion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But perhaps no one is as disappointed as the designers behind the 1986 design, including Rub\u00e9n Santiago Hern\u00e1ndez, who won a logo contest as a young designer and, 40 years later, still marvels at the impact he made.<\/p>\n<p>The logo was \u201can opportunity to create something that [would] represent the unity of these three countries coming together to celebrate a common passion,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey missed that. It\u2019s so corporate. They just put a 2-6, and that\u2019s it. (Duncan Raban\/Popperfoto\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p>To understand the designers\u2019 frustration with the 2026 design, you have to understand the legacies of the logos that came before it.<\/p>\n<p>It began, in fact, with the work of an American designer, Lance Wyman, who combined traditional Mexican iconography with a minimalist design to create the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olympics.com\/en\/olympic-games\/mexico-city-1968\/logo-design\" rel=\"\">1968 Olympics logo<\/a> and the icons for each Olympic competition. Wyman\u2019s linear typography borrowed elements from patterns of the Huichol, an Indigenous people of Mexico, and were so popular the country hired him to design the map and signage of Mexico City\u2019s metro system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a psychedelic quality to it. It expressed youth culture in a very optical way,\u201d said Steven Heller, a former co-chair of the School of Visual Art\u2019s MFA design program. \u201cIt was of its time, like any piece of architecture that stands out in your mind for being of a particular moment. (Carlo Fumagalli\/AP)<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p>When the 1970 World Cup rolled around two years later, Mexicans, still enamored with the \u201868 Olympics design, hired Wyman again. Santiago, a young Mexican designer who was still in school during those two tournaments, said he found Wyman\u2019s designs \u201cfantastic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was fascinated,\u201d he said. \u201cMaybe that\u2019s one of the reasons I went into designs and arts. I just loved it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the 1986 event, soon after the deadly 1985 earthquake that devastated Mexico City, FIFA launched a logo design competition. Santiago\u2019s brother and father urged him to submit. He sent in four designs, including one with a red-and-white football between a split world map drawn in horizontal lines.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6326\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/movinginsiderusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/0f3e0ae753ef24a128bda148035a001c.jpg\" width=\"629\" srcset=\"https:\/\/movinginsiderusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/0f3e0ae753ef24a128bda148035a001c.jpg 629w, https:\/\/movinginsiderusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/0f3e0ae753ef24a128bda148035a001c-300x207.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 629px) 100vw, 629px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<figcaption>Santiago works on the official logo for the 1986 Mexico World Cup. (Rub\u00e9n Santiago Hern\u00e1ndez)<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Underneath it, he wrote \u201cMexico 86\u2033 in bold, green typography that evoked the linear typography used years before in Wyman\u2019s designs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomehow this design has caused the emotional response it has \u2026 because of the concept itself: The world united by a soccer ball,\u201d Santiago said about the \u201886 logo.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/movinginsiderusa.com\/?p=6316\">Babar Azam replaces Shan Masood as Pakistan test captain<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to [illustrate] the concept of the world united by a soccer ball, and then Mexico \u2014 because there were some divisions in Mexico because after the earthquake, there was a lot of political strife,\u201d he said. \u201cI wanted to represent Mexico united with the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Soon enough, his lettering and depiction of soccer as a unifier of countries, and of Mexico in particular, were everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>Nostalgia for that era in Mexican culture has given the Mexico \u201868, \u201870 and \u201886 logos a second life, with retailers using the typography on clothes and accessories as recently as this year. American brand Hollister used it. Bruty\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The 2026 logo is simple: There\u2019s a blank number 2 sitting on top of a blank number 6, with a picture of the World Cup trophy layered over the two digits. It \u201cdoesn\u2019t really emote at all,\u201d Santiago said.<\/p>\n<p>It is the first time a World Cup logo features the actual trophy on it, and none of the host countries\u2019 colors \u2014 red, white, blue or green \u2014 is in the base design.<\/p>\n<p>When FIFA first introduced the logo in May 2023, President Gianni Infantino said the \u201cunique\u201d branding was part of a \u201crallying cry\u201d for all three host nations. But the base logo introduced in 2023 has basically remained the leading icon of the World Cup, its variants largely being photos of host city stadiums layered in the 2 and the 6.<\/p>\n<p>In Mexico, fans quickly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.milenio.com\/deportes\/futbol-internacional\/mundial-2026-fifa-revela-logo-oficial-copa-del-mundo-en-mexico?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"\">unleashed<\/a> widespread criticism of the design.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can make it better on Paint if you want,\u201d a user <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/leongonzalo\/status\/1659283091066613764?s=20\" rel=\"\">commented<\/a> on X, referring to the free design software included with Microsoft Windows.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPinche logo, it\u2019s horrible,\u201d another user posted.<\/p>\n<p>Heller, the American designer, said it has \u201cno concept.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Mexico \u201868 Olympics, there\u2019s something revelatory about it, a surprise, there\u2019s a gift,\u201d he said in an interview. \u201cYou look at [the 2026 logo], and it\u2019s, you know, it looks like New York taxi cab lettering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The typography on the \u201826 logo, Heller said, is a \u201cvery common form of art brut lettering that is happening these days, and I don\u2019t dislike it.\u201d But if FIFA intended to promote unity across the three host countries as Infantino suggested in 2023, Heller said, it\u2019s doing so in a \u201csubversive way.\u201d So subversive, in fact, that Heller can\u2019t find it.<\/p>\n<p>When asked why his designs have remained popular in the cultural market, Santiago said it\u2019s because they communicate \u201can idea rather than a trend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat simplicity of the logo plays an important role, the strongest symbols are often those that can be recognized instantly,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6329\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/movinginsiderusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/d258e5662674da8f71ea2827d0392b7c-1024x683.jpg\" width=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/movinginsiderusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/d258e5662674da8f71ea2827d0392b7c-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/movinginsiderusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/d258e5662674da8f71ea2827d0392b7c-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/movinginsiderusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/d258e5662674da8f71ea2827d0392b7c-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/movinginsiderusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/d258e5662674da8f71ea2827d0392b7c-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/movinginsiderusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/d258e5662674da8f71ea2827d0392b7c-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<figcaption>The logo in Toronto. (Kevin Sousa\/Imagn Images\/Reuters)<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p>And while the 2026 design is simple, Santiago, like Heller, said \u201cit doesn\u2019t have a concept.\u201d He theorized that it hasn\u2019t had the same impact on fans because it \u201cis not a logo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a picture of this trophy with a stylized two-six in the background, but that does not make it \u2014 it makes it a photograph,\u201d he said. \u201cA photograph is not a logo. \u2026 It\u2019s a moment.
