(Jeff Amy/AP)

TOCCOA, Ga. — Republicans view Georgia as one of their top chances to pick up a seat in this year’s Senate elections, but the most successful Republican in the state fears the party is careening toward an old mistake.

Brian Kemp, the state’s tonally moderate and highly popular governor, is fervently trying to prevent his party from nominating a Republican candidate for Senate who he argues is too polarizing to win an election in an increasingly purple Georgia.

The leading candidate in the primary in both fundraising and public polling, Rep. Mike Collins, has faced criticism for his provocative social media posts, including some that promoted the conspiracy theory that President Joe Biden ordered the 2024 assassination attempt against then-candidate Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania. Collins also faces an ethics investigation over allegations that his then-chief of staff misused taxpayer money to pay a friend. Collins’s office has denied the allegations.

“We want to win this Senate seat back. I don’t have to explain to you all what happened in the last several cycles that hasn’t gone so well for our side, and we got to change that,” Kemp told voters recently at a diner in Toccoa, Georgia.

Republicans acknowledge that a baggage-ridden candidate tanked their shot at winning back a Senate seat in 2022, when former football star Herschel Walker challenged Democratic Sen. Raphael G. Warnock. Walker fabricated a past in law enforcement and regularly bungled his public appearances. He faced allegations of domestic violence and paying for multiple abortions. Walker lost the race by nearly three percentage points.

Kemp is backing former football coach and attorney Derek Dooley for the nomination, spending his money and political capital on Dooley, and weeks on the road vouching for him at diners, cafes and banquet halls. A political neophyte, Dooley asserts he doesn’t have the same liabilities that sank Walker in the general election, while arguing that Collins does.

“I don’t have any of those things,” Dooley told voters at a farm in Danielsville.

Georgia Republicans will select their Senate candidate Tuesday to challenge incumbent Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff, one of the best funded Democratic candidates in the country. Rep. Buddy Carter (R-Georgia) is also running in the GOP primary, pouring millions into ads, and has been neck-and-neck with Dooley for second place.

Washington Republicans aggressively recruited Kemp to challenge Ossoff. They were impressed by Kemp’s ability to attract crossover voters and his high approval ratings. Both would be major assets in a year when Trump’s popularity is dipping among swing voters.

Recruiting Kemp would have also staved off a Republican primary that has split the party while Ossoff rakes in millions and builds his defensive machine. Ossoff has far out-raised any other candidate in the race, reporting more than $32 million in the bank for his reelection as of the end of April.

Kemp declined to run and instead recruited Dooley, his childhood best friend’s brother who left Georgia decades ago to coach football.

Kemp has so far not been able to transfer his political magic to his protégé, despite appearing with him on the campaign trail and in his advertising. A Kemp affiliated super PAC, Hardworking Americans Inc., has spent or reserved nearly $2 million in ads supporting Dooley, according to data from AdImpact.

But some Georgians seem unconvinced by the argument that Dooley is the only candidate who can beat Ossoff. They are unafraid to run a MAGA warrior in the purple state.

Patrick Hall, a Collins supporter at a coffee shop meet-and-greet for the congressman in Dahlonega, said he, like several other attendees, admired Kemp and even the Dooleys for their football legacy. But Collins won his vote for his consistent conservative record in Congress.

“He doesn’t seem to be out of touch,” Hall said.

Dooley is the son of former Georgia Bulldogs coach Vince Dooley. His background has made him a household name to many Georgians — though he notably served as head coach for the University of Tennessee, a rival of the University of Georgia. He argues that his experience recruiting and leading football players “from all walks of life” has prepared him to inspire a broader array of voters and represent a diverse state.

Read more Agencies won’t hand over records for an investigation into how DOGE accessed data

“We haven’t won a Senate race in 10 years, and candidates matter,” Dooley said in an interview. “Georgia has a lot of voters that either don’t show up in midterms or don’t always vote Republican.”

But that argument has not dislodged Collins. He comfortably leads in the polls, often by double digits, over Dooley and Carter. Dooley and Carter are hoping to make it to a June 16 runoff by preventing Collins from winning more than 50 percent of the vote Tuesday.

Collins said his experience in the trucking industry helped him connect with working people, calling himself “just a blue-collar, successful guy in the trucking business who’s been beat on for over 30 years in one of the most regulated and taxed industries there is in this country.”

Collins has overcome heavy spending by his opponents. Carter, who is also running as a MAGA-associated fighter, has had more than $7 million in supportive ads, and Dooley more than $2 million, compared with $765,000 for Collins, according to data from AdImpact.

Collins acknowledges that he needs to appeal beyond core conservatives in a general election, bringing out what he called the “Atlanta suburban crowd” that does not care about MAGA‘s agenda.

“You know what they want? They want somebody to go to Washington and do something,” Collins told voters recently at a coffee shop in Toccoa. “Bipartisan is not a bad word to them.”

Collins said he can appeal to those voters with his legislative record, including two bills signed into law during his two terms in office. One of the bills, the Laken Riley Act, beefed up the federal government’s obligations to detain undocumented immigrants arrested for theft, including misdemeanors. The bill passed with bipartisan support. It was the first bill Trump signed into law in his second term and is named after a nursing student who was killed by an undocumented immigrant in Collins’s district.

In an interview, Collins dismissed Dooley’s assertions that he is too polarizing for a general election and implied Dooley also had liabilities that Democrats would unearth, though he declined to detail them.

Collins also waved away concerns about his social media presence, saying several of his posts were sent by staffers without his review and “I took care of those employees.” Collins’s campaign did not specify what kind of disciplinary action was taken, who the employees were or which posts were not authorized.

He has joked online about sending an undocumented immigrant on “Pinochet air” in reference to the former dictator of Chile whose regime executed political prisoners by throwing them out of aircraft. Collins also quipped online: “You either die a Kennedy with a hole in the brain or live long enough to become a Kennedy with a hole in the brain,” in reference to Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s claim in a 2012 deposition that he had a worm in his brain.
