President Donald Trump canceled plans Friday to sign a bipartisan bill aimed at lowering housing costs, saying it was an act of protest<\/a> against the Senate\u2019s failure to pass the Save America Act.<\/p>

For months, Trump has pushed the Save America Act, which would require people to provide proof of citizenship to register to vote and to show photo identification at the polls, among other restrictions. The president is convinced that passing the voting bill would \u201cguarantee the midterms\u201d for the GOP.<\/p>\n

The reality is more complicated. In March, I wrote about how the Save America Act could actually backfire on Republicans<\/a> if passed, in part because of the types of voters who tend to have less access to documentation or who could face a significant barrier if they need to reregister to vote.<\/p>

That has not stopped Trump from continuously pressuring Senate Republicans to pass the legislation by whatever means possible, even if it means getting rid of the filibuster. On Friday, Trump again threatened lawmakers in his own party over the bill: \u201cTHE SAVE AMERICA ACT\u2019S non-passage is CRAZY, and a serious threat to any politician who votes against it!\u201d he wrote on Truth Social.<\/p>\n
