Michigan businessman Shri Thanedar (D), who has held a Detroit-based seat since 2023, is facing a challenge from Detroit DSA-endorsed Donavan McKinney. McKinney, 34, has campaigned on affordability, Medicare-for-all and opposition to ICE. Thanedar, who has pushed to impeach Trump, has focused his campaign on fighting the president and his policies. McKinney has criticized Thanedar over money he received from pro-Israel donors and over a 2017 lawsuit that alleged he inflated the value of his former company before selling it. Thanedar denied wrongdoing, and the lawsuit was settled before trial.

3. DSA-endorsed Oliver Larkin is challenging moderate Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Florida) in a South Florida seat. Earlier this year, Republicans redrew the seat to favor their party, and President Donald Trump won the new district by nine percentage points in 2024. Larkin has been criticizing Moskowitz, who has served in the House since 2023, for his staunch support for Israel, for his vote for the Laken Riley Act that allowed the detention of undocumented immigrants accused of theft-related crimes and for joining the House’s “DOGE Caucus” aimed at severely cutting government spending. Doris Matsui (D) in November under the state’s top-two primary system. Matsui, 81, has held the seat since 2005 and succeeded her husband, Robert T. Matsui, who had held it since 1979. Jones, who is backed by the Sanders-founded organization Our Revolution, has focused on affordability while calling for universal child care, Medicare-for-all and a working-class tax refund. Jones faces an uphill battle in November as Thompson — a member of the House’s conservative Blue Dog Coalition campaigning on fiscal responsibility, preventing gun violence and protecting the environment — has significant establishment support.

3. Four Black candidates are facing Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Florida), who is White, in Florida’s historically Black 20th Congressional District. After Florida redistricted this year, Wasserman Schultz decided to run in the overwhelmingly Democratic district instead of her toss-up home district, prompting criticism from her opponents. The challengers have discussed working together to defeat Wasserman Schultz. But if they all remain in, Wasserman Schultz could benefit from a splintered opposition.

4. Kai Newkirk, who describes himself as a democratic socialist and is endorsed by Our Revolution, is challenging Rep. Greg Stanton (D-Arizona) in Arizona’s 4th Congressional District. Stanton has represented the district since 2019. Newkirk has attacked Stanton for his support for Israel, his vote for the Laken Riley Act and his opposition to Medicare-for-all. Stanton, who boasts support from local politicians and unions, is campaigning on fighting Trump and lowering costs.

Other candidates have been campaigning on calls for generational change, focusing less on ideological battles.

1. In Boston and its suburbs, 39-year-old Patrick Roath is challenging 71-year-old Rep. Stephen F. Lynch (D) who has served in the House for 25 years. Roath, a lawyer endorsed by Boston’s teachers union, has criticized Lynch for backing the Laken Riley Act and for being one of only 34 Democrats to vote “no” in 2010 on the Affordable Care Act, President Barack Obama’s signature health care law. Lynch says that he leads with “integrity, honesty, and common sense.”

2. In Connecticut, 47-year-old former Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin is facing off against 77-year-old Rep. John B. Larson, who has held the seat since 1999. Bronin advocates “new energy, new ideas, and new perspectives in Washington,” according to his website. Larson has also criticized Bronin for accepting donations from wealthy donors.
