Does the Senate spend too much time out of Washington?<\/p>\n

Sen. Rick Scott (R-Florida) thinks so. In a Fox News op-ed published Monday<\/a>, the hard-line conservative asserted that the upper chamber takes too many recesses and has too short of a workweek. He noted that senators often call it a week by Thursday afternoon to fly home and that the Senate has spent only 79 days in session this year.<\/p>

\u201cWe have the strongest economy because of the workers who bust their butts every day to do their jobs, provide for their families and achieve the American Dream,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI think the Senate should demonstrate the kind of work ethic we depend on from the American people to keep our economy running.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scott\u2019s argument is not new. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) pushed for a five-day workweek during his 2024 run for majority leader. He lost the race to Sen. John Thune (R-South Dakota).<\/p>

Senators generally use weekends and recess weeks to meet with constituents or with leaders overseas. During election years, senators in competitive states spend a considerable amount of their recess campaigning.<\/p>\n
