New Napoli coach Massimiliano Allegri<\/a> is confident of successfully following in Antonio Conte\u2019s footsteps.<\/p>

After all, he\u2019s done it before.<\/p>\n

Allegri replaced Conte at Juventus in 2014, after Conte steered the Bianconeri to three Serie A titles. Allegri went on to win five straight at Juventus as well as guiding the team to four Italian Cup titles and two Champions League finals.<\/p>\n

Conte left Napoli in May<\/a> after two years in charge, during which his team finished first and second in the Italian league. Allegri, who was fired by AC Milan<\/a> at the end of the season, was confirmed as his successor at the beginning of July and was given a three-year contract.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am inheriting a squad that is certainly accustomed to hard work,\u201d Allegri said on Tuesday, in his first press conference as Napoli coach. \u201cConte has proven his worth throughout his career. I\u2019m lucky, this is actually the second time I\u2019ve inherited Antonio\u2019s team \u2014 let\u2019s hope it\u2019s a good omen.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will be important to work with seriousness and professionalism, and above all to lay the groundwork for reaching March \u2014 as I always say that\u2019s when seasons are decided \u2014 still in contention for all our objectives: Serie A, the Champions League, the Italian Cup.\u201d<\/p>\n

Allegri was fired by Milan after what the club\u2019s owners deemed \u201can unequivocal failure\u201d of a season. Despite spending much of the campaign in the top two positions and fighting for the title, a run of only two wins in Milan\u2019s last eight matches dropped it to fifth on the last day of the season<\/a> .<\/p>

\u201cIt\u2019s not a question of redemption; sometimes seasons just end a certain way. I\u2019m disappointed by how things turned out last season,\u201d Allegri said. \u201cWe were in the top three from Matchday 2 through Matchday 37; we only dropped out on the first and last matchdays, and the last one is the one that counts.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m disappointed because, in all my time coaching \u2014 at Juventus and Milan \u2014 this was the first time I\u2019ve finished outside the top four. And I won\u2019t deny that it\u2019s weighed on me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Milan replaced Allegri with Ruben Amorim<\/a> , and at the Portuguese coach\u2019s presentation<\/a> team owner Gerry Cardinale referred to him as a coach who plays to win, rather than playing not to lose.<\/p>\n

\u201cI absolutely do not comment on the ownership\u2019s words,\u201d Allegri said. \u201cI can only thank those who supported me all season.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen, unfortunately, we are sorry for the missed objectives, but another year begins, beautiful to experience, we have three competitions and we start with great enthusiasm.\u201d<\/p>
