Abbott <\/b>thinks about the 2024 election, he vividly recalls one sign: \u201cTrump Low Prices\u201d atop \u201cKamala High Prices\u201d in big block letters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were not subtle about this in 2024,\u201d said Abbott, recalling how the signs were \u201call over Pennsylvania.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two years later, that messaging \u2014 which successfully delivered Pennsylvania to President <b>Donald Trump<\/b> and helped Republicans flip two critical House seats in the eastern sweep of the state \u2014 is coming home to roost.<\/p>\n<p>I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/07\/15\/pennsylvania-republicans-won-lowering-prices-then-came-iran-war\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/07\/15\/pennsylvania-republicans-won-lowering-prices-then-came-iran-war\/\">wrote about this dynamic today<\/a> with <b>Cat Zakrzewski<\/b>, ahead of a speech Trump will give in Pennsylvania. Republicans were undoubtedly successful in making prices <i>the <\/i>issue of the 2024 election, but 18 months later, prices remain stubbornly high \u2014 because of everything from Trump\u2019s trade wars to the ongoing shooting war with Iran \u2014 and Republicans who ran on lowering prices two years ago are having to grapple with how to deal with the issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is pretty damning,\u201d Abbott said of what this dynamic presents to Republicans in Pennsylvania. \u201cThey have created for themselves this permission structure to have to own all the prices for themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We homed in on the two Republicans who flipped Pennsylvania seats in 2024 \u2014 <b>Rob Bresnahan <\/b>and<b> Ryan Mackenzie<\/b>. Both face challenging reelections in 2026 that could determine control of Congress in the last two years of Trump\u2019s presidency.<\/p>\n<p>Bresnahan, ahead of his election, told a radio host that Democrats were \u201cgaslighting\u201d voters by arguing that grocery prices were not surging. \u201cWe\u2019re fed up with paying too much at the grocery store. We\u2019re fed up paying too much for groceries. We\u2019re fed up paying too much for rent. We\u2019re fed up paying for utilities that are out of this world,\u201d Bresnahan said on the conservative \u201cBob Cordaro Show\u201d a week before Election Day in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The messaging worked. He defeated incumbent Democrat <b>Matt Cartwright<\/b> by just over 6,000 votes in a hotly contested Northeast Pennsylvania district.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Bresnahan is both arguing that prices are coming down \u2014 as he did around Thanksgiving 2025 \u2014 and acknowledging that grocery prices are still too high.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrocery receipts are getting shorter, but the price keeps going up,\u201d Bresnahan says in a straight-to-camera ad that is running in his district.<\/p>\n<p>This has become a campaign issue for Bresnahan. Scranton Mayor <b>Paige Cognetti<\/b>, the Democrat challenging Bresnahan,<i> <\/i>has repeatedly accused him of violating his promise to lower costs by backing the president\u2019s war and other policies. \u201cInstead of focusing on lowering costs, Rob Bresnahan is sending our tax dollars overseas while our prices keep rising at home,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PaigeGCognetti\/status\/2062685927156167088?s=20\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PaigeGCognetti\/status\/2062685927156167088?s=20\">she posted<\/a> on June 4.<\/p>\n<p><b>Samantha Bullock<\/b>, a campaign spokeswoman for Bresnahan, blamed Democrats for continuing economic troubles.<\/p>\n<p>The messaging also worked for Mackenzie, who ousted Rep. <b>Susan Wild<\/b> (D-Pennsylvania) in 2024 by promising \u201creal change\u201d on inflation and blaming Democrats for ignoring it. In interviews, he said people were having to \u201cchange their lifestyle just to put food on the table,\u201d and that \u201cthe Democrats and the mainstream media want to gloss over that and tell you how great things are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Mackenzie often notes that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/mackenzie.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/congressman-mackenzie-hails-strong-q3-gdp-report\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/mackenzie.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/congressman-mackenzie-hails-strong-q3-gdp-report\">more work remains<\/a>\u201d on bringing prices down, he has argued that inflation and prices are falling. \u201cAfter four years of uncontrolled inflation, American families are finally seeing price stability,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepMackenzie\/status\/1928849102621622577\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepMackenzie\/status\/1928849102621622577\">wrote on X in 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mackenzie told us in a statement that he has made reducing the cost of living his top priority and blamed former president <b>Joe Biden<\/b>\u2019s administration for the \u201chole\u201d families are currently digging out of.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I have done from the beginning, I\u2019ll keep working to deliver on the affordability priorities of the American people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The issue here for both lawmakers is that they have to figure out a way to tie themselves to Trump \u2014 he likely won\u2019t tolerate any criticism of his record \u2014 without doing exactly what Bresnahan blamed Democrats for doing in 2024: gaslighting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoters have said resoundingly over the years, \u2018Yes, it does matter, and we don\u2019t care about whose fault it is, we don\u2019t like it,\u2019\u201d said <b>Christopher Nicholas<\/b>, a Republican strategist in Pennsylvania. \u201cAnd voters tend to take it out on the party in power.\u201d<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/movinginsiderusa.com\/?p=7508\">England coach Thomas Tuchel has a recipe for handling World Cup stress. It includes ice cream<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Republicans got a sliver of good news this week when the Labor Department\u2019s monthly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2026\/07\/14\/june-inflation-cools-gas-prices-fall-risks-remain\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2026\/07\/14\/june-inflation-cools-gas-prices-fall-risks-remain\/\">inflation report reflected a drop in energy prices<\/a> following the mid-June agreement that extended a tentative ceasefire with Iran.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat means prices are coming way down, and we\u2019re doing a great job,\u201d Trump said on Tuesday. \u201cAnd remember that. Remember that for the midterms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Trump himself has said this month that the ceasefire is over, and energy prices spiked in recent days due to the resumed fighting in Iran.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRyan Mackenzie and Rob Bresnahan were elected because voters wanted real leaders focused on lowering costs and getting the economy back on track instead of out-of-touch nonsense,\u201d said <b>Mike Marinella<\/b>, a spokesperson for the House Republicans\u2019 campaign arm. \u201cThat\u2019s exactly why President Trump and House Republicans have been delivering on historic tax relief, lower energy costs, and pro-growth policies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You can read our full report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/07\/15\/pennsylvania-republicans-won-lowering-prices-then-came-iran-war\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/07\/15\/pennsylvania-republicans-won-lowering-prices-then-came-iran-war\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Well, that was quick.<\/p>\n<p>Trump backed away from his plan to charge a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2026\/07\/14\/oil-prices-jump-after-trumps-threats-strait-hormuz\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2026\/07\/14\/oil-prices-jump-after-trumps-threats-strait-hormuz\/\">20 percent fee on all ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz<\/a> on Tuesday, giving those who subscribe to the TACO (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2025\/06\/03\/taco-tuesday-why-it-bothers-trump\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2025\/06\/03\/taco-tuesday-why-it-bothers-trump\/\">Trump Always Chickens Out<\/a>) theory of the presidency a win after the president declares the strait \u201cis open to ALL Ship traffic except for Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Our colleagues <b>Victoria Craw<\/b>,<b> Suzan Haidamous <\/b>and<b> Maegan Vazquez <\/b>reported Tuesday that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2026\/07\/14\/oil-prices-jump-after-trumps-threats-strait-hormuz\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2026\/07\/14\/oil-prices-jump-after-trumps-threats-strait-hormuz\/\">Trump\u2019s initial promise<\/a> of a levy to move through the strait sent European markets tumbling and oil prices climbing.<\/p>\n<p>The president wrote that he would replace a \u201c20% United States Reimbursement Fee with Trade and Investment Deals that the various Gulf States will be making into the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This brief moment where the United States was going to do the very thing they criticized Iran for doing highlights how tenuous this entire foray into Iran is for the president. He has said, time and again, that he has no problem continuing the war with Iran, noting that the Vietnam War lasted 19 years, a pittance compared with this five-month conflict.<\/p>\n<p>But backing away from this plan, which experts argued would have sent prices soaring, highlights the political pressure on the president, whose political fortunes this November \u2014 as we established earlier in this newsletter \u2014 will be directly tied to his ability to bring prices down and quell broader economic concerns from restive voters.<\/p>\n<p><b>Southern Maryland Chronicle<\/b>: Recriminations and lawsuits press on after <a href=\"https:\/\/southernmarylandchronicle.com\/2026\/07\/13\/environmental-fallout-lawsuits-stalk-potomac-river-after-sewage-spill\/?\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/southernmarylandchronicle.com\/2026\/07\/13\/environmental-fallout-lawsuits-stalk-potomac-river-after-sewage-spill\/?\">millions of gallons of untreated sewage spilled into the Potomac River<\/a> five months ago.<\/p>\n<p><b>LAist<\/b>: The Department of Health and Human Services <a href=\"https:\/\/laist.com\/brief\/news\/health\/trumps-hhs-abandons-threat-to-withhold-medicare-and-medicaid-funding-over-trans-care\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/laist.com\/brief\/news\/health\/trumps-hhs-abandons-threat-to-withhold-medicare-and-medicaid-funding-over-trans-care\">will not move forward<\/a> with a plan to block federal funding to hospitals that provide pediatric gender-affirming care to people under 18.<\/p>\n<p><b>San Antonio Current<\/b>: A new report finds that the growth of data centers around San Antonio will require <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sacurrent.com\/news\/san-antonio-news\/report-san-antonio-data-centers-will-use-enough-energy-to-power-3-million-homes\/?\" rel=\"\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sacurrent.com\/news\/san-antonio-news\/report-san-antonio-data-centers-will-use-enough-energy-to-power-3-million-homes\/?\">enough power to energize 3 million homes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Access to the White House is a sensitive subject for those who live in Washington, D.C., and the millions of people each year who visit.<\/p>\n<p>As we noted in yesterday\u2019s newsletter, critics of the president have accused him of fortifying the White House, restricting access far beyond the original gates of the federal mansion, and Trump officials are now proposing further <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/07\/10\/trump-plan-would-fence-pennsylvania-avenue-outside-white-house\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/07\/10\/trump-plan-would-fence-pennsylvania-avenue-outside-white-house\/\">fencing off public spaces outside the building<\/a>. Others will note, however, that Trump has been the target of multiple assassination attempts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I have lived in Washington nearly all my life, I have seen access to the White House slowly being limited. I remember driving right in front of it and behind it. At one point, you could walk between the Treasury and the East Wing,\u201d wrote <b>Robert Hanawalt<\/b>. \u201cTrump is making a White House Versailles at the expense of the American taxpayer and he needs to explain how he is paying for it aside from robbing budgets that have lawfully been allocated by the Congress to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBarricades and fencing? What is Trump so afraid of? And why,\u201d asked <b>Jane Sinner<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe biggest effect, I think, is psychological and mostly subconscious.
