{"id":7830,"date":"2026-07-20T10:05:22","date_gmt":"2026-07-20T10:05:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/movinginsiderusa.com\/?p=7830"},"modified":"2026-07-20T10:05:22","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T10:05:22","slug":"the-supreme-court-grapples-with-a-new-era-of-political-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/movinginsiderusa.com\/?p=7830","title":{"rendered":"The Supreme Court grapples with a new era of political violence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In today\u2019s edition \u2026 Trump goes to his first World Cup match \u2026 We ask you about the tournament now that it\u2019s over \u2026 but first \u2026<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/movinginsiderusa.com\/?p=7827\">Republicans don\u2019t want to go there again on Trump\u2019s 2020 election fraud claims<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The United States is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2026\/07\/19\/us-teeters-return-all-out-war-with-iran-after-more-troops-killed\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2026\/07\/19\/us-teeters-return-all-out-war-with-iran-after-more-troops-killed\/\">now preparing for \u201ca wider war\u201d with Iran<\/a>, an official told several of our colleagues, following the death of at least three and possibly four U.S. service members over the past few days.<\/p>\n<p>These were the first U.S. deaths in the conflict since the U.S. and Iran reached a ceasefire deal last month that has since fallen apart. (Nathan Howard\/AP)<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Supreme Court justices don\u2019t often appear before Congress after they\u2019ve gone through the confirmation process. (And as contentious as those confirmation hearings get sometimes, who can blame them?)<\/p>\n<p>But last week, Supreme Court Justices <b>Elena Kagan<\/b> and <b>Amy Coney Barrett <\/b>testified before both House and Senate subcommittees \u2014 the first time in seven years that sitting justices have given public congressional testimony. The important subject for this rare visit? Security.<\/p>\n<p>Kagan, nominated to the court by President <b>Barack Obama<\/b>, and Barrett, chosen by President<b> Donald Trump<\/b>, teamed up to be the face of the Supreme Court\u2019s request for $921 million in security funding for the coming fiscal year. That\u2019s $29 million more than allotted last year, $15 million of which would go to making members of the Supreme Court Police available as personal protection details for justices and their families.<\/p>\n<p>That both a liberal and a conservative justice would visit<b> <\/b>Congress to pitch this request reflects both bipartisan concern about political violence \u2014 Kagan says threats against justices increased 25 percent in 2025 and are expected to climb 38 percent this year \u2014 and the bipartisan nature of those threats.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, <b>Nicholas Roske <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2025\/04\/08\/kavanaugh-assassination-plot-guilty-plea\/\" rel=\"\">pleaded guilty<\/a> to attempting to assassinate Justice <b>Brett M. Kavanaugh<\/b>, a Trump nominee. In an online message, Roske talked about his anger at \u201cthe thought of <i>Roe v. Wade<\/i> and gay marriage both being repealed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>U.S. District Judge<b> Esther Salas<\/b>\u2019s son was murdered and her husband seriously wounded by a man whom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/courts_law\/sonia-sotomayor-esther-salas-60-minutes\/2021\/02\/19\/0374cc80-72c7-11eb-93be-c10813e358a2_story.html\" rel=\"\">Salas said was found to have<\/a> \u201ca manila folder with a workup on Justice <b>Sonia Sotomayor<\/b>.\u201d The shooter, <b>Roy Den Hollander<\/b>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2020\/07\/judge-esther-salas-shooting-suspect-left-pro-trump-paper-trail\/614425\/\" rel=\"\">was an avid Trump supporter and self-described \u201canti-feminist.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For most of its history, the Supreme Court has had the least visibility of the branches of government and, as a result, has required the least security. <b>G. Edward White<\/b>, a law professor at the University of Virginia and editor of the Journal of Supreme Court History, recalls the security as minimal<b> <\/b>at the Supreme Court during his 1971 clerkship with then-Chief Justice <b>Earl Warren<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was no visible security,\u201d White told the Early Brief. \u201cThe public entering the court wasn\u2019t screened and nobody who was actually participating in an oral argument was screened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But threats against Supreme Court justices have increased significantly in the last decade \u2014 along with their security details \u2014 with SCOTUSBlog editor and former Trump DOJ spokeswoman <b>Sarah Isgur<\/b> noting that \u201cthe security needs of the court actually far more track the overall polarization of voters than it does anything about the court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And with the Supreme Court frequently being called upon to wade into America\u2019s increasingly polarized waters, the court has become a regular political bogeyman for both Democrats and Republicans \u2014 and especially for Trump, who has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/06\/22\/tensions-run-high-supreme-court-prepares-rule-3-key-trump-priorities\/\" rel=\"\">repeatedly attacked both the court as a whole and individual justices<\/a>, including his own nominees.<\/p>\n<p>Isgur worries all of this will affect jurists\u2019 willingness to serve on the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese justices don\u2019t change what cases they\u2019re taking or which way they\u2019re voting, because the threats are coming from both sides \u2026 the effect of the threats is actually to deter future people from taking these jobs,\u201d said Isgur, who personally knows one judge who was on the shortlist for a vacancy who told Isgur he worried about the impact taking a Supreme Court justiceship would have on his young family.<\/p>\n<p>Because the threats to the Supreme Court appear to be largely borne out of a broader cultural polarization, justices aren\u2019t alone in facing heightened threats.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has been the target of multiple assassination attempts just in the last two years. Michigan Gov. <b>Gretchen Whitmer <\/b>(D) was the target of a far-right <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2022\/08\/23\/whitmer-kidnapping-guilty-trial\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2022\/08\/23\/whitmer-kidnapping-guilty-trial\/\">kidnapping plot in 2020<\/a>. Minnesota state Rep. <b>Melissa Hortman<\/b> and her husband were killed in their home last year by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2026\/06\/11\/gunman-expected-plead-guilty-killing-minnesota-lawmaker-melissa-hortman\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2026\/06\/11\/gunman-expected-plead-guilty-killing-minnesota-lawmaker-melissa-hortman\/\">a shooter who was targeting state Democratic lawmakers<\/a>. Even non-famous election workers and volunteers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2024\/11\/01\/election-workers-trump-threats-abuse\/\" rel=\"\">are facing unprecedented threats and bullying<\/a>. America has entered a new era of divisive political rhetoric and political violence, a reality with which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2026\/05\/02\/political-violence-security-spending\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2026\/05\/02\/political-violence-security-spending\/\">everyone at every level of U.S. politics is now having to contend<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/thepublicservicealliance.com\/psa-security-project\/campaign-and-committee-spending\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/thepublicservicealliance.com\/psa-security-project\/campaign-and-committee-spending\/\">report released earlier this year<\/a> by the Public Service Alliance, a nonpartisan group focused on government worker safety, found federal campaigns and committees spent more than five times as much on security in the 2023-2024 campaign cycle as in the 2015-2016 cycle.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/movinginsiderusa.com\/?p=7822\">Argentina\u2019s goalkeeper had a game for the ages. Then Spain scored.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Based on spending trends and without a steep drop in political violence, security will be a major expenditure in the 2028 cycle as well \u2014 especially since many of the politicians considered likely candidates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2028-election\/political-violence-thrusts-2028-candidates-national-stage-rcna213289\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2028-election\/political-violence-thrusts-2028-candidates-national-stage-rcna213289\">are already dealing with threats and attempts on their lives<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So what was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/interactive\/2026\/07\/08\/whats-next-us-mens-soccer-after-another-disappointing-world-cup\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/interactive\/2026\/07\/08\/whats-next-us-mens-soccer-after-another-disappointing-world-cup\/\">Trump\u2019s role<\/a> in the World Cup?<\/p>\n<p>Before the 2026 World Cup in the U.S., Mexico and Canada, the popular assumption was that the attention-hungry president would be everywhere. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/06\/12\/world-cup-comes-trumps-america\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/06\/12\/world-cup-comes-trumps-america\/\">This newsletter<\/a> even leaned into that assumption.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, that was somewhat wrong.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2025\/07\/13\/trump-world-cup\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2025\/07\/13\/trump-world-cup\/\">first match Trump attended<\/a> at this World Cup was the tournament\u2019s final. While his administration policies certainly hung over the event and he did wade into the controversy surrounding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2026\/07\/06\/trumps-request-before-reprieve-us-star-casts-pall-over-world-cup-match\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2026\/07\/06\/trumps-request-before-reprieve-us-star-casts-pall-over-world-cup-match\/\"><b>Folarin Balogun\u2019s<\/b> red card<\/a>, the president\u2019s direct involvement was far less than expected.<\/p>\n<p>The president did indicate before the match that he was rooting for Argentina, noting that while he didn\u2019t want to pick sides <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2026\/07\/19\/live-updates-argentina-spain-face-off-2026-world-cup-final\/#link-UVEQ7FFPLZANFLQDIL3UYMH64Y\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2026\/07\/19\/live-updates-argentina-spain-face-off-2026-world-cup-final\/#link-UVEQ7FFPLZANFLQDIL3UYMH64Y\">Argentine President <b>Javier Milei<\/b> is \u201ca friend\u201d<\/a> and that it is \u201chard to bet against <b>[Lionel] Messi<\/b>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump was joined at the match by several of his children: <b>Tiffany<\/b>,<b> Eric<\/b> and his wife <b>Lara<\/b>, and <b>Ivanka<\/b> and her husband <b>Jared Kushner<\/b>. Trump was briefly booed when his image appeared on the screen at the end of the national anthem, and then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2026\/07\/19\/live-updates-argentina-spain-face-off-2026-world-cup-final\/#link-JKUGKIZ7KJGXDMEA75SQTATMRY\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2026\/07\/19\/live-updates-argentina-spain-face-off-2026-world-cup-final\/#link-JKUGKIZ7KJGXDMEA75SQTATMRY\">booed again<\/a> when he presented the trophy to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2026\/07\/19\/spain-scoring-late-tops-argentina-1-0-win-2026-world-cup\/\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2026\/07\/19\/spain-scoring-late-tops-argentina-1-0-win-2026-world-cup\/\">winning Spanish team<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>(Actor <b>Javier Bardem<\/b> was a suite away from the Trump kids and was much better received by the crowd than Trump \u2014 dancing and waving to fans, he was maybe the most invested fan in this match.)<\/p>\n<p>So why are we watching this?<\/p>\n<p>This will not be the last time Trump hosts a major sporting event in this term, with the Summer Olympics coming to Los Angeles in 2028. The events are certainly different \u2014 the Olympics, for example, kick off with elaborate  Opening Ceremonies that have traditionally included world leaders.<\/p>\n<p>But how Trump handled this World Cup may be instructive in how he handles events like the Olympics later in his term.<\/p>\n<p><b>Minnesota Star Tribune: <\/b>Fifteen Minnesotans are facing federal charges for allegedly conspiring to impede or injure federal officers during the Trump administration\u2019s immigration enforcement crackdown in Minnesota. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/antifa-or-organizers-minnesota-prosecution-tests-trumps-legal-crackdown-on-the-left\/601860105\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/antifa-or-organizers-minnesota-prosecution-tests-trumps-legal-crackdown-on-the-left\/601860105\">More than $350,000 has been raised to support their legal fees<\/a>, with many observers expressing skepticism of the indictments.<\/p>\n<p><b>The News &amp; Observer (North Carolina)<\/b>: Gov. <b>Josh Stein<\/b> (D) has been traveling the state to highlight the recovery from Hurricane Helene, which devastated Western North Carolina in 2024. The state government recently approved another $700 million in recovery funds, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsobserver.com\/news\/politics-government\/politics-columns-blogs\/under-the-dome\/article316535808.html\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.newsobserver.com\/news\/politics-government\/politics-columns-blogs\/under-the-dome\/article316535808.html\">Stein is pushing for the federal government to approve another $10 billion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>San Francisco Chronicle:<\/b> Canada\u2019s wildfires have made headlines lately, with smoke blanketing much of the United States in the last week. The economy, Trump\u2019s corruption, and foreign policy are my primary concerns right now.
