(Emily Elconin\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p>ANN ARBOR, Michigan \u2014 The attack ads <i>s<\/i>uggesting that Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed is sexist have become so pervasive that even his daughter, 8, asked why people say he\u2019s mean to women.<\/p>\n<p>In the most ubiquitous one, El-Sayed\u2019s critiques of Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and former first lady Michelle Obama\u2019s signature initiative are presented as evidence he disrespects women.<\/p>\n<p>His explanation to his daughter is that \u201csome really bad people\u201d don\u2019t want him to get elected. His explanation to grown-ups is that he is not contemptuous of women, in particular, but holds disdain for a flawed political system he wants to rebuild. And he makes no apologies for that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a lot of contempt for the system,\u201d he said in an interview. \u201cI\u2019m not here to play nice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A former public health official with the skillful delivery of a podcaster, El-Sayed has built a progressive candidacy that establishment Democrats <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/06\/05\/hard-charging-michigan-liberal-dampens-democrats-hopes-retaking-senate\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/06\/05\/hard-charging-michigan-liberal-dampens-democrats-hopes-retaking-senate\/\">view as a threat<\/a> to gaining control of the Senate in November.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ve backed his more moderate opponent, Rep. Haley Stevens, in Tuesday\u2019s primary, arguing that El-Sayed\u2019s far-left views and acerbic tone will turn off swing voters and hand power to Republican Mike Rogers, a former congressman who narrowly lost a Senate bid two years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The dynamic reflects Democrats\u2019 long-simmering civil war between left-wing populism and establishment figures fearful progressive wins would spoil their carefully built coalitions and cost them winnable races in swing states.<\/p>\n<p>In the final days of the Michigan campaign, a flood <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/michigan-government\/fact-check-ads-take-el-sayed-out-of-context-to-claim-he-disrespects-women\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/michigan-government\/fact-check-ads-take-el-sayed-out-of-context-to-claim-he-disrespects-women\/\">of political ads attacking <\/a>El-Sayed as sexist hit mailboxes as Stevens\u2019s supporters describe a<i> <\/i>pattern of playing on stereotypes about women, diminishing their intellect and suggesting they cannot think for themselves.<\/p>\n<p>While El-Sayed called Stevens \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AmaniUniverse\/status\/2082951961389707471\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AmaniUniverse\/status\/2082951961389707471\">the least capable candidate in America<\/a>,\u201d he\u2019s also aimed his razor-sharp wit and ridicule at billionaires, establishment Democrats who need \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/therealnews.com\/abdul-el-sayed-believes-a-new-democratic-party-is-possible\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/therealnews.com\/abdul-el-sayed-believes-a-new-democratic-party-is-possible\">to molt out<\/a>,\u201d mainstream media that he says cherry-pick narratives, Republicans, foreign governments, and most especially corporations that pour cash into politics as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AbdulElSayed\/status\/1978141346947797088\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AbdulElSayed\/status\/1978141346947797088\">legalized bribery<\/a>.\u201d All, he says, are elements of a political system that deserve scorn for protecting a failed status quo.<\/p>\n<p>El-Sayed, who has Egyptian heritage, would be the country\u2019s first Muslim senator. He and many of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wlns.com\/your-local-election-hq\/rima-mohammad-denounces-el-sayed-ads\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wlns.com\/your-local-election-hq\/rima-mohammad-denounces-el-sayed-ads\/\">his supporters<\/a> see the allegations of sexism as a persecution built on tropes about Middle Eastern men, part of the reason El-Sayed has cast himself as a David against the Goliath of establishment Democrats and corporate interests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s easy when you\u2019re running against somebody who looks like me to run the treads of a well-worn stereotype,\u201d El-Sayed said.<\/p>\n<p>The pro-Israel lobby connected to American Israel Public Affairs Committee, known as AIPAC, has spent $30 million opposing El-Sayed, much of that accusing him of disrespecting women. El-Sayed has told AIPAC to \u201cburn their money\u201d trying to defeat him. He calls the war in Gaza a genocide and campaigns on ending military aid to Israel.<\/p>\n<p>The accusations about sexism aren\u2019t confined to attack ads. Women backing Stevens, a three-term congresswoman who worked for the Obama administration, have also called out his language as a potential political liability and said he needs to be held accountable for his own words.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have enough attacks on women,\u201d said Kelly Garrett, mayor pro tem of the Detroit suburb of Lathrup Village. \u201cIf there\u2019s even an iota of it, it\u2019s not worth it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Hillary Scholten (D-Michigan), who has given multiple interviews about what she called \u201cdeeply intense sexism\u201d in the race, told The Post that the attack ads aside, not all criticisms of El-Sayed are a fabricated smear campaign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbdul needs to answer for his own words,\u201d said Scholten, a Stevens supporter.<\/p>\n<p>El-Sayed has not walked back the comments that drew the most backlash. He once called the popular Whitmer, who recently endorsed Stevens and beat El-Sayed in the 2018 gubernatorial primary, \u201cbought and paid for\u201d because she took donations from a company her father led. He has said<b> <\/b>Stevens can\u2019t \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/06\/30\/2026\/el-sayed-unloads-on-media-democratic-criticism\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/06\/30\/2026\/el-sayed-unloads-on-media-democratic-criticism\">string two coherent sentences<\/a> together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe issue is not intelligence,\u201d he said of Stevens, whom he called \u201cplenty smart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I think about her is actually quite secondary to what I think about her style of politics, because it\u2019s exactly everything I\u2019m running against,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Stevens has not directly called him sexist, but she critiques his approach as \u201cunfortunate\u201d and \u201cinsulting,\u201d saying that he lodges complaints without articulating plans to solve problems.<\/p>\n<p>El-Sayed has surged in polls. With his \u201cmoney out of politics, money in your pocket, Medicare-for-all\u201d populist slogan, a viral online presence and an irreverent embrace of polarizing new media figures, El-Sayed has attracted powerhouses from the ascending political left.<\/p>\n<p>The success drew unprecedented cash for a Michigan primary, with <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/adimpact_pol\/status\/2083285360189035002?s=46\" rel=\"\">more than $60 million<\/a> in outside spending attacking him or boosting Stevens. Stevens adopted a contemptuous tone as the election nears. One of her recent <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/HaleyforMI\/status\/2083016340219048447?s=20\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/HaleyforMI\/status\/2083016340219048447?s=20\">X posts<\/a> called El-Sayed \u201cbuddy\u201d and \u201cbro\u201d and accused him of wanting to blame \u201call of your problems on Jewish Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He describes attacks on his character as evidence of a flailing Democratic establishment fearful of what could follow a decisive progressive win in a crucial swing state.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/movinginsiderusa.com\/?p=8480\">With another loss to the Braves, the Nationals look less like contenders<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt turns out, I don\u2019t need you to like me,\u201d El-Sayed said at a volunteer rally in Pontiac last week, where he encouraged supporters to be courageous enough to fight for policies to make their lives better.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need you to like you,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>His ridicule has been aimed at men, too: He<b> <\/b>mocked Heath and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for working out in jeans. He called the presumed Republican nominee Rogers \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AbdulElSayed\/status\/1958571953339375878\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AbdulElSayed\/status\/1958571953339375878\">a beta\u201d<\/a> and taunted the 63-year-old former congressman for posting an AI-enhanced picture that gave Rogers a muscular upper body. He likened primarying 6-foot-8 Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman (D), a critic of Democrats who question Israel, to putting an ogre\u2019s head on a spike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs John Fetterman not an ogre?\u201d Abdul asked in an interview. \u201cWhat else do you compare him to? I mean, he\u2019s very ogre-like to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Susan J. Demas, a longtime Michigan political journalist, said that while El-Sayed\u2019s scathing critiques apply to men, too, she sees \u201can edge to his attacks when he\u2019s facing female opponents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>El-Sayed has also said state Sen. Mallory McMorrow (D), who dropped out of the race, lacked charisma and \u201ccopies my homework, just poorly.\u201d He criticized her as misunderstanding health care reform, wishing her <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AbdulElSayed\/status\/2014435043377123778?s=20\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AbdulElSayed\/status\/2014435043377123778?s=20\">\u201cGood luck!!<\/a>\u201d in reading his book on the topic.<\/p>\n<p>Shannon Watts, a McMorrow supporter and founder of the gun violence prevention group Moms Demand Action, said it\u2019s impossible to separate El-Sayed from an online bro-culture that bolsters his candidacy and uses his contempt as license to ridicule Stevens\u2019s voice, mannerisms and appearance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a very toxic culture,\u201d Watts said. \u201cI\u2019m not interested in someone who\u2019s contemptuous toward women, even if they\u2019re contemptuous toward everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Watts endorsed Stevens after McMorrow dropped out, and AIPAC\u2019s SuperPAC has used her words \u2014 without her consent, she notes \u2014 in ads accusing El-Sayed of disrespecting women. The same ad quotes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/cifamerica\/2010\/dec\/25\/sarahpalin-michelleobama\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/cifamerica\/2010\/dec\/25\/sarahpalin-michelleobama\">a 2010 op-ed <\/a>he wrote that called then Obama\u2019s anti-obesity efforts \u201cineffectual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>El-Sayed points out he called it \u201ccommendable, if ineffectual\u201d because the root causes of obesity have less to do with exercise and more to do with race and poverty. And he argued that if his opponents could dig up more than a constellation of out-of-context comments, it would have been blasted across Michigan TV, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they had any evidence of my actual mistreatment of women, you would have heard all about it in ad after ad,\u201d he said. \u201cThe best you got is that I wrote an op-ed about the Let\u2019s Move campaign?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The online mockery of Stevens became a liability recently, when it reached a fever pitch and El-Sayed spoke up on X that \u201cit\u2019s become impossible to ignore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you support me please stop,\u201d he wrote, before listing a number of policy positions he thought his supporters should use to attack her instead. \u201cWe don\u2019t need to be unkind to be honest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Months before the political attacks started, El-Sayed\u2019s wife,<i> <\/i>Sarah Jukaku, had worried people would take something he said the wrong way.<\/p>\n<p>Sitting at her dining room table in February, she talked about the stress of running to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/03\/17\/abdul-el-sayed-michigan-senate\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/03\/17\/abdul-el-sayed-michigan-senate\/\">the first Muslim in the Senate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s such a subtle way of otherizing someone. When you\u2019re like a brown guy or Muslim guy, you know, the easiest thing to tack on to you is sexism, right?\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s not how he is,\u201d she said. \u201dIt feels so unfair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pervasive narrative about El-Sayed has seeped deeply into the fabric of the race, with Stevens\u2019s supporters seeing sexism and El-Sayed\u2019s seeing cynical politics at its worst.<\/p>\n<p>At one of El-Sayed\u2019s recent canvassing events in Saginaw, Serenity Hope Salak dismissed the sexism allegations as a selective misunderstanding of his candidacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe doesn\u2019t disparage women,\u201d she said. \u201cHe tells people that things aren\u2019t working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At a recent rally in Ferndale, Laura Varga, 64, described herself as a feminist who sees El-Sayed\u2019s mission to rid money from politics as pivotal to reversing the country\u2019s decline.<\/p>\n<p>Then she spent four days knocking on 200 doors for him, only to come home to a mailer that cited <a href=\"https:\/\/movinginsiderusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2cbec5e1be91b5deef6828704f6a49bb.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/mcolaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/2022-10-28-Mount-Sinai-Complaint.pdf\">a discrimination lawsuit<\/a> against his former employer as evidence he disrespects women. For about 90 minutes, she said, she \u201cspiraled\u201d at the thought she\u2019d boosted a candidate she couldn\u2019t support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy values and my vote are the only thing I can control in this race,\u201d she said. \u201cThe fearmongering got ahold of me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She ultimately looked up the ongoing lawsuit and read for herself that he was not accused of personally mistreating women.
