<\/figure>\n\nA lot of money is being spent in this year\u2019s primaries. It\u2019s becoming a huge focus of the races.<\/p>\n
High-profile Democratic <\/b>primaries today in Michigan and Missouri will test whether anger over outside spending can overcome enormous financial advantages. In the Michigan Senate primary, progressive Abdul El-Sayed<\/b> is running against centrist Rep. Haley Stevens<\/b>, attacking the congresswoman for benefiting handsomely from corporate and pro-Israel super PAC spending.<\/p>\n
In Missouri, former representative Cori Bush<\/b> is hoping to make a comeback riding the progressive rage against pro-Israel spending supporting her opponent, Rep. Wesley Bell<\/b>.<\/p>\n
Whether those messages are landing will become clear today. Both El-Sayed and Bush have been considerably overspent, but El-Sayed in particular appears to have a real shot of winning, leading in several recent public polls.<\/p>\n
Stevens\u2019s campaign has raised more than $11 million as of mid-July, according to Federal Election Commission filing reports, with contributors from small-dollar donors to energy, chemical and pro-Israel interest groups.<\/p>\n
Dwarfing that is an enormous amount of money buying ads supporting Stevens independent of her campaign. AIPAC and affiliated groups have spent close to $30 million backing Stevens, according to ad-tracking firm AdImpact. She also has several more millions from dark-money groups whose backers are not publicly disclosed.<\/p>\n
In other election years, that kind of cash advantage could seal the deal for Stevens. But this year, the money <\/i>has become a line of attack.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s a reason that I\u2019m up in nearly all the polls, despite the fact that they\u2019ve outspent us 20 to 1, 30 to 1,\u201d El-Sayed told me last month. \u201cThat money is corrupting on its own terms, and people understand what will transpire if they support a candidate who\u2019s taking that kind of money, and they don\u2019t want that anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n
Democratic attitudes toward Israel have shifted sharply, and candidates perceived as supporting Israel\u2019s war in Gaza are often cast as out of touch with their base. But, El-Sayed argues, <\/b>just as powerful is frustration that a lobby that operates to benefit a foreign government is spending millions to influence an American election.<\/p>\n
A similar dynamic is happening in Missouri, where AIPAC\u2019s super PAC is spending more than $2 million to support Bell, who has the clear cash advantage. He has raised more than $3.5 million as of mid-July to Bush\u2019s roughly $1.3 million. But the race remains competitive.<\/p>\n
The Missouri House race was a bit of a precursor to the current backlash to outside spending. Bush was ousted from Congress in 2024 during a bruising primary battle into which AIPAC poured money to support Bell. The difference now is that more voters are aware of influence of AIPAC and may respond more negatively to it.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe only reason Wesley Bell is even in Congress is because AIPAC bought him that seat in Congress,\u201d said Usamah Andrabi<\/b>, communications director at Justice Democrats, which supports Bush. \u201cIt takes some losses for us to really bring the scope of how corrupt these lobbies are to the general public and for them to really understand that.\u201d<\/p>\n
The animus toward AIPAC is so severe that the group has used other vehicles for its funding in some Democratic primaries. In Illinois<\/a>, for example, the group funded PACs with neutral-sounding names like Elect Chicago Women to funnel money in support of their preferred candidates. It wasn\u2019t until after primary day that they disclosed being funded by AIPAC.<\/p>\n Both Bell and Stevens deny the notion that such spending is dictating their positions. Stevens has accused her opponent of peddling in antisemitic tropes by accusing her of supporting Israel solely because she receives support from the pro-Israel lobby.<\/p>\n \u201cThe difference between my opponent and myself on this issue is that I believe in a two-state solution,\u201d Stevens said during a debate last month. \u201cI can say that Israel has a right to peacefully exist alongside the people of Palestine and in Gaza.\u201d<\/p>\n Pro-Israel groups defend their right to spend money in elections like any other interest group.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s our goal to build the biggest possible bipartisan pro-Israel majority in Congress,\u201d said Patrick Dorton<\/b>, a spokesperson for AIPAC\u2019s super PAC. \u201cWe want to make sure that the voice of pro-Israel Democrats is heard in the primary process.\u201d<\/p> Read more Trump keeps making threats. Washington and the world have stopped flinching.<\/a><\/p>\n Another House member is under fire following allegations of impropriety.<\/p>\n Rep. Chuck Edwards<\/b> (R-North Carolina) is facing possible censure after the House Ethics Committee reported allegations of \u201cpersistent unprofessional and inappropriate conduct,\u201d Mariana Alfaro<\/b> reports. Edwards denied breaking any laws, and his legal team said he was being targeted unfairly.<\/p>\n \u201cRepresentative Edwards emphasizes that he has endeavored to comply with all applicable laws regarding his conduct during his time as a Member of Congress and before,\u201d his attorneys wrote in a statement released by the committee. <\/b>\u201cOnce more, he states his sincere regret if his conduct caused any staff member discomfort or was unwelcome.\u201d<\/p>\n The committee did not find he had any sexual relations with staff, which is banned by House rules. But it did find he knowingly engaged in behavior that made his young female staffers uncomfortable.<\/p>\n The House faced calls to dig more deeply into allegations of sexual misconduct following reporting that then-Reps. Eric Swalwell<\/b> (D-California) and Tony Gonzales<\/b> (R-Texas) had inappropriate sexual relations with their staffers. Swalwell was accused of sexual assault. Both announced their resignations from Congress when faced with expulsion votes that in all likelihood would have been successful.<\/p>\n Rep. Max Miller<\/b> (R-Ohio) is also facing increased scrutiny over allegations that he physically abused his ex-wife, Emily Moreno<\/b>, the daughter of Sen. Bernie Moreno <\/b>(R-Ohio). Miller has faced calls to halt his reelection bid amid the allegations, including from his former father-in-law. Miller has denied physically abusing his ex-wife.<\/p>\n Read more from Mariana<\/a>.<\/p>\n Rep. Mike Collins<\/b>, the Republican nominee in Georgia\u2019s competitive Senate race, is having a fundraiser at the Senate Republicans\u2019 campaign arm headquarters today. Georgia Democrats plan to be there, too.<\/p>\n The party will have a moving billboard highlighting recent reporting about Collins\u2019s son-in-law, David Alan Scheer II<\/b>. CNN revealed last month<\/u><\/a> that Scheer had shared white-nationalist, pro-Nazi and antisemitic content online. He also called for the deportation of Muslims.<\/p>\n Scheer appears to be close to Collins, appearing in family photos and listed at an address owned by Collins. He also seemingly produced promotional material for Collins\u2019s company, CNN reported.<\/p>\n Collins shut down a news conference last week when confronted with questions about if he ever paid or hired Scheer.<\/p>\n \u201cYou know, we\u2019ve fully addressed that,\u201d Collins said at the time. \u201cBut Jon Ossoff<\/b> refuses to disavow these democrat socialist movements in our country.\u201d<\/p>\n Collins has never said if he ever paid Scheer for campaign work.<\/p>\n Several prominent Republicans are scheduled to attend the fundraiser, including National Republican Senatorial Committee Chair Tim Scott <\/b>and Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso<\/b>.<\/p>\n Michigan Advance:<\/b> Michigan reported two deaths from cyclosporiasis<\/a>, the illness caused by a parasite spread through contaminated food and water.<\/p>\n Missouri Independent:<\/b> The number of Missourians getting the abortion pill through the mail from out of state has quadrupled since 2023<\/a>.<\/p>\n The Atlanta Journal-Constitution:<\/b> Heavy flooding in North Georgia could jeopardize access to clean water for weeks<\/a>.<\/p>\n I was reading this fun piece<\/a> by my colleague Andrea Sachs<\/b> about missing a flight because of a cup of coffee, and it got me thinking: When is the best time to show up to the airport for a flight?
