Anita LeBrun\u2019s months-long campaign to allow her retirement home to serve alcohol<\/a> paid off Tuesday, when Amira Choice in Champlin, Minnesota, held its first happy hour under new state law.<\/p>

LeBrun, who testified before state lawmakers<\/a> in March, drank a glass of pinot grigio wearing a shirt decorated with glittery wineglasses.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was very rewarding,\u201d said LeBrun, 82. \u201cAnd to think that we started way back in February, it just gave me a good feeling that I had done my best.\u201d<\/p>\n

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) signed the bill \u2014 known among lawmakers as the \u201cGrandparents\u2019 Happy Hour\u201d bill \u2014 on July 14 allowing state nursing homes and assisted-living facilities to serve alcohol without an additional license. The new law went into effect Saturday.<\/p>

With her legal fight complete, LeBrun said she is looking forward to dedicating more time to her book and gardening clubs. She said the past few months have taught her and her peers a lesson.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou got to keep plugging along,\u201d she said, then deadpanned: \u201cEven if you\u2019re old.\u201d<\/p>\n
