MADISON, Wis. \u2014 Francesca Hong\u2019s opponents in the Democratic primary for Wisconsin governor largely ignored her trove of social media posts<\/a> pushing for abolishing the police, calling for canceling Thanksgiving and saying White people in a fast-food restaurant were putting her \u201con the verge\u201d of an anxiety attack.<\/p>\n

Republicans are far more willing to highlight them, especially now that she leads polls<\/a> for Tuesday\u2019s primary. Hong, a democratic socialist state representative, has been responding in recent interviews \u2014 including one this week where she called Thanksgiving her favorite holiday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to cancel it,\u201d she told Politico<\/a>. \u201cI actually love it.\u201d<\/p>\n

As people sought to limit gatherings in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic, Hong posted, \u201cCancel Thanksgiving. Should have done this in 1621.\u201d In the same post, which has since been deleted, she referred to Thanksgiving as a day \u201ccelebrating colonialism.\u201d In another post<\/a> around the same time, she called Thanksgiving a \u201ccolonizer holiday.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hong has deleted the post about canceling Thanksgiving but has left up others.<\/p>\n

In one, she called for abolishing the U.S. Senate<\/a>; in others, defunding<\/a> and abolishing<\/a> police. In another, Hong, the daughter of South Korean immigrants, described discomfort<\/a> in a Culver\u2019s restaurant in Black River Falls, Wisconsin.<\/p>

Hong this week called such posts jokes in a statement to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel<\/a>.<\/p>\n
