On Oct. 11, 1991, law professor Anita Hill testified before Congress that she was sexually harassed by then-Judge Clarence Thomas, as the Senate Judiciary Committee weighed whether to support Thomas’s nomination to the Supreme Court. Thomas has denied Hill’s allegations that he sexually harassed her while he was her supervisor, and he went on to secure a lifetime appointment to the high court, where he remains a justice.

Hill’s testimony was a watershed moment in the national conversation around sexual harassment in the workplace. She faced ridicule and pressure to resign from her teaching job after her testimony but continued teaching and has remained an advocate for women’s rights decades later.
