President Donald Trump blamed Minnesota’s government for a cyberattack that targeted more than 30 water systems this week, even as federal officials suspect Iran’s involvement.

“I blame it on Minnesota because they’re grossly incompetent,” Trump said at a gathering of Cabinet officials at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland. “I would blame it on Minnesota and the governor, the corrupt governor of Minnesota. Iran’s got bigger problems than worrying about Minnesota.”
U.S. intelligence agencies have assessed that Iran was probably behind the Minnesota cyberattacks, according to several U.S. officials.
Though intelligence agencies have not definitively concluded that Tehran is responsible for the attacks, the hack follows urgent warnings by federal cybersecurity officials that Iran for months has been targeting internet-exposed devices that control operations at water, wastewater and energy facilities in the United States.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) hit back on social media at Trump’s comments. “Trump knows exactly who is responsible for this attack and knows that other states were hit too. This is what modern warfare looks like, and it further illustrates there’s no plan to win a war with Iran,” he said.
