Washington Commanders backup quarterback Marcus Mariota suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament and will miss the remainder of the postseason, according to a source familiar with the situation.
The person spoke on the condition of anonymity to freely discuss internal team matters.
Mariota injured his knee during the first quarter of the Commanders’ 20-7 win over the Miami Dolphins in their preseason opener Friday at Northwest Stadium. He initially stayed in the game but left after further examination. Starting quarterback Jayden Daniels didn’t play.
Mariota, 32, is in his third season with the Commanders after signing a one-year, $7 million deal in March. He threw 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 11 games (eight starts) last season while Daniels suffered through an injury-plagued campaign.

Daniels and Mariota were the only quarterbacks assured of making the Commanders’ 53-man roster, though the team could roster another if Mariota’s injury extends beyond the preseason. Third-year veteran Sam Hartman and rookie Athan Kaliakmanis have been battling in camp for a potential third-string role, but neither player has stood out.
Hartman was the first quarterback off the bench Friday when Mariota went down. He completed 8 of 15 passes for 80 yards and threw an interception. Kaliakmanis later entered the game and connected on 6 of 10 passes for 87 yards.
Washington could also explore the free agent market if Mariota misses additional time and neither Hartman nor Kaliakmanis appears ready to serve as Daniels’s backup.
