Just as Jayden Daniels is set to make his return, the Washington Commanders have another quarterback on the mend.

Coach Dan Quinn said quarterback Marcus Mariota suffered a sprained MCL in his right knee against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. It’s the same injury he suffered in Week 1 of the preseason in August.

That first sprain kept Mariota out for about three weeks. With his second one coming in season, Washington has the option to place him on injured reserve and still leave the door open for him to come back at some point this year. Quinn didn’t provide a timeline for Mariota’s return.

“I don’t have an exact timetable yet,” Quinn said. “He’ll be working off the side [at practice] through the next week or so.”

Mariota started two games in the absence of starting quarterback Jayden Daniels, who dislocated his left elbow Sept. 20. When Mariota went down against the Colts, rookie Athan Kaliakmanis stepped up in his place.

Quinn reiterated Daniels will play against the New York Giants on Sunday. He was a limited participant in practice last week, but he will be a full participant this week. Barring any setbacks, he will play just three weeks after his elbow injury.

“The goal is for him to have a full week of practice and start on Sunday,” Quinn said.

While Mariota is out, Kaliakmanis will serve as Daniels’s backup. Washington has one more in-house quarterback: Sam Hartman. He’s on the practice squad but could be elevated to the active roster to provide the Commanders some additional injury insurance.

“I liked what I saw from Athan in some spaces, but we really don’t have an update for you until we know maybe the length of where we’re at with Marcus,” Quinn said when asked whether he’s considering adding another veteran quarterback. “The fact that it was the same injury he’s had, hopefully there’s some familiarity with where it is, but it’s just too early to call in that space with his return to play.”
