
Former Democratic rising star Andrew Gillum, who came within 33,000 votes of defeating Ron DeSantis in the 2018 Florida governor’s race, was arrested last week in Alabama and charged with drug possession.

Police in Daphne, Alabama, stopped Gillum, 46, for “erratic driving” late Thursday and saw a glass pipe on the center console of his vehicle, Daphne Police Chief Brian Gulsby said.
Officers also found several rolled marijuana cigarettes and three packages that tested positive for methamphetamine in Gillum’s car, authorities said. He was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana, according to police records.

The arrest, first reported by TMZ, is the latest in a string of blows for Gillum, a former mayor of Tallahassee. In 2020, Gillum was found intoxicated in a Miami Beach hotel room with two men; he entered rehab and came out as bisexual later that year. In 2022, a federal grand jury indicted Gillum on charges of conspiracy and wire fraud.
