A new website, lakeamerica.ca, offers a humorous look at President Donald Trump’s order to rename the large body of water, straddling the U.S.-Canadian border, from Lake Ontario to Lake America.
As soon as he saw the news two days ago that Trump was threatening to make the change, Toronto resident Wesley Almeida looked up the lakeamerica.ca domain. It was free, so Almeida saw an opportunity to do something that would make his friends and family laugh.
The site hosts an explainer of what is going on, merch and a map of the lake that reads, “One lake. Two countries. Potentially two names.”

“It’s meant to be a factual, lightly relevant, not-political campaign,” said Almeida, who works in digital marketing. “I just thought, ‘Well, this is a moment in time.’”
He designed the merch with the help of AI tools, and is printing them on demand. He has already gotten inquiries about printing bulk orders.
