President Donald Trump on Wednesday said the attendees of a National Hispanic Heritage Month celebration at the White House would be among the first people to walk the floor of the ballroom he is building at the White House. But his invitation came with a warning.

“Don’t fall over the edge because it’s a long way down,” Trump said. “And only Hispanic could survive that fall.”

Trump said that the attendees needed to exercise caution because there was “no fencing … no nothing” at the construction site.

Some attendees of the celebration in the East Room cheered in response to Trump’s comment. Trump spoke for nearly an hour to his Hispanic supporters, as polling shows Latino voters who supported him in the 2024 elections are abandoning him.

“I’m not overly worried,” Trump said about the prospect of a guest falling, before pivoting back to his midterm message. “Again, we got to get out and vote. … We have to turn this around.”
