Adam Hamilton, a Democrat challenging Sen. Roger Marshall (R-Kansas), criticized the incumbent Tuesday over a report that he sued hundreds of patients over unpaid bills during his decades as an obstetrician-gynecologist.
The New York Times reported that Marshall had sued more than 700 patients, 81 of whom were arrested for missing court dates.
“In Washington, Roger Marshall votes to strip healthcare and raise costs,” Hamilton wrote on X. “In Kansas, he sued more than 700 patients who couldn’t afford the bill. Dozens were handcuffed and jailed.”
Hamilton, a Methodist pastor, is facing an uphill battle against Marshall. No Democrat has won a Senate race in Kansas since 1932, and the nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates the race as “Likely Republican.”

Payton Fuller, a Marshall spokeswoman, said Marshall had delivered more than 5,000 babies over his career and had treated patients regardless of their ability to pay, including those on Medicaid.
“Sixty days before an election, the New York Times has decided that a rural doctor keeping the hospital’s lights on is some kind of scandal,” Fuller said in a statement. “Kansans know better.”
