Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky), the former Senate majority leader, was hospitalized Sunday morning, his office said in a statement that did not address his condition.

“He is receiving excellent care,” David Popp, McConnell’s spokesman, said.

No other details were released about McConnell’s status. Popp did not immediately respond to questions about why McConnell was hospitalized and his symptoms.

McConnell, 84, has faced several health issues in recent years. In December 2024, he fell during a Republican lunch, spraining his wrist and sustaining a minor scratch to his face.

In March 2023, he fell and suffered a concussion and broken rib during a private dinner at a Washington hotel. He was absent from the Senate for nearly six weeks as he recovered. That year, he also fell during a trip to Helsinki in February and in July at Reagan National Airport. He also froze twice while speaking in public that summer.

The longtime senator from Kentucky stepped down from Senate leadership in 2024 and announced in 2025 that he will not seek reelection.

McConnell will leave the Senate in January having forged a legacy as an adept negotiator and strategist — helping shape the conservative majority on the Supreme Court and securing tax cuts during President Donald Trump’s first term.
