While both players made their lone field goal attempt in the Commanders’ preseason opener on Friday, a 20-7 win over the Miami Dolphins, Stevens had been significantly more accurate throughout training camp practices.

Moody signed with the Commanders in November after he was released by the San Francisco 49ers and the Chicago Bears. Although he went on to make 10 of 11 field goals and 10 of 11 extra points, Washington still brought in competition this offseason.

Stevens signed with the Commanders as an undrafted free agent in April after wrapping up a four-year career at Iowa. He had an up-and-down tenure there and made only 80 percent of his field goals but displayed enough talent to earn an NFL shot.

Now, the 22-year-old has come out on top in what was arguably the Commanders’ most important position battle of training camp. Kicker has been a revolving door for the Commanders, who have used seven players at the position over the past two seasons. Now, they’re hoping Stevens brings that uncertainty to an end.
