Dozens of House Democrats joined their Republican colleagues Tuesday to shelve articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, seeking to avoid injecting a political bomb into the upcoming midterms.
Introduced without the blessing of Democratic leaders, it was Rep. Al Green’s latest attempt to impeach Trump before he leaves office next year. The Texas Democrat, who became known for his long-standing crusade against the president, lost his bid for a 12th term in his May primary.
This impeachment resolution — Green’s eighth overall and the fourth since Trump returned to the White House — charged the president with high crimes and misdemeanors for operating his immigration enforcement agencies with disregard for civil liberties and due process.

Democrats impeached Trump twice during his first term, but he was not convicted by the Senate either time, so they have been reluctant to embark on another effort, which would likely fail in a Republican-controlled Congress while providing campaign fuel for the GOP.
The House voted 232-147 to table Green’s resolution, iwth 18 Democrats voting in favor. Following the recommendation of Democratic leadership, who said the serious investigative work needed to justify impeachment had not been done, 46 Democrats voted “present,” effectively helping to kill the measure.
