BRUSSELS ― Iceland summoned the U.S. ambassador after President Donald Trump posted a map showing the country and other areas in the colors of the American flag, which Icelandic officials Tuesday described as “an insult” and “completely inappropriate.”

The image, shared by Trump on Monday on Truth Social, depicts Canada, Mexico, Cuba, Greenland and Iceland covered in stars and stripes, with the territory in red, white and blue, and labeled “United States of America.”

Iceland’s prime minister, Kristrun Frostadottir, called the post “ridiculous” in comments to reporters.

“It is an insult to Icelanders, Canadians and Greenlanders,” she said Tuesday. “There is nothing funny or normal about poking fun at the sovereignty of states.”

Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir summoned U.S. Ambassador Billy Long to a meeting to convey that the post was “completely inappropriate,” Iceland’s national broadcaster RUV reported.

Trump’s territorial designs have upended ties with longtime U.S. partners, including his rhetoric about annexing Canada and his bid to take Greenland from NATO ally Denmark.

The diplomatic rift with Iceland this week comes soon after the country held a referendum on whether to restart talks to join the European Union.

Iceland, a member of the U.S.-led NATO alliance, has been rattled by Trump’s fixation with seizing Greenland, its larger neighbor, including comments in which the president seemed to confuse the two.

Trump’s ambitions in the Arctic had pushed Iceland to reconsider E.U. membership, but the small island nation voted by a narrow majority last month against reopening talks on joining the bloc.
