House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-New York) and former president Barack Obama plan to hold a fundraiser in New York City on Thursday as Republicans partake in the second night of their midterm convention, which they’ve referred to as “Trumpapalooza.”

Jeffries — who could become the first Black speaker of the House if Democrats win the majority in November — and Obama will be fundraising for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the campaign arm of House Democrats.

Obama is still widely seen as a leader of the Democratic Party, despite having left the White House almost a decade ago. He has made some appearances on the campaign trail, including at a taco truck stop with the Democratic Senate candidate in Texas. Obama has also appeared in ads for the Democratic Senate candidate in Iowa.

On Thursday, after the first night of the GOP convention — which heavily featured President Donald Trump, who is not on the ballot in November — Jeffries released a new ad criticizing Republicans’ festivity, saying they are “partying in Dallas with their billionaire donors while everyday Americans are drowning in this economy.”
