The University of Texas said it is “proud to celebrate” all its students after racist social media posts by Bo French, the Republican nominee for Texas railroad commissioner, over the weekend.

On Sunday, French shared a photo of University of Texas students at a home football game — most of whom appeared to be non-White — celebrating the Longhorns’ victory. He wrote on X that “the problem is now obviously far worse than anyone imagined” and that “social media is exposing how many Americans have been displaced by foreigners.”

A representative for the University of Texas at Austin initially declined to comment on Monday. However, on Monday evening, the university posted a statement from Kevin P. Eltife, chairman of the UT System Board of Regents, that said that when he “looked up at the seats filled with incredible fans, I saw Longhorns.”

“I’m proud to celebrate all our Longhorn students today and every day,” he added.

University President Jim Davis also wrote: “Our students are exceptional. All of them are Longhorns.”

Many Republicans have condemned French’s posts, including outgoing Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), who said such behavior was “how great political parties self-destruct.”

It comes at a time when Republicans have expressed concern about the close races for Senate and governor unfolding in the state.

Democrats also widely condemned French’s posts.

French’s campaign did not immediately respond to an overnight request for comment.
