House GOP seeks to push funding deadline to avoid shutdown before midterms

House Republican leaders aiming to avoid a government shutdown before this fall’s elections unveiled legislation Friday to fund the government through Dec. 4.

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) said he plans to bring the resolution to the floor next week as lawmakers are unlikely to pass all appropriations bills by the Sept. 30 deadline through the normal bipartisan process.

The government has shut down three times since President Donald Trump took office for his second term. A fourth shutdown just weeks before the midterm elections could cause backlash for Republicans.

The resolution will require nearly all Republicans and, at the very least, some Democrats in the Senate to pass. Support for the measure is unclear.

Some conservative House Republicans have demanded that the Save America Act, the elections overhaul bill championed by Trump, be attached to must-pass measures. This stopgap bill does not include the Save America Act.
