Ocasio-Cortez endorsed Abdul El-Sayed, a former Wayne County health official, in an interview with the New York Times published Wednesday. It is the first time she has endorsed in a Senate race this year.
The race for the open Senate seat in Michigan has split Democrats ahead of the Aug. 4 primary. Schumer and several moderate-leaning Democratic senators are backing Rep. Haley Stevens, who Schumer has argued has the best chance to defeat former congressman Mike Rogers, the likely Republican nominee.
Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) and Chris Van Hollen (D-Maryland) are supporting El-Sayed. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) and several other Senate Democrats have endorsed a third candidate, state senator Mallory McMorrow.

Schumer has recruited strong candidates in several competitive Senate races this cycle, including Ohio, Alaska and North Carolina, but other candidates he has backed have struggled. Maine Gov. Janet Mills, whom Schumer recruited to challenge Republican Sen. Susan Collins, suspended her campaign ahead of the primary, and Stevens has trailed El-Sayed in recent polling.
