The U.S. DOGE Service, the cost-cutting effort spearheaded by entrepreneur Elon Musk that disbanded numerous federal and aid programs in a failed effort to cut trillions in government spending, marked what it said was the end of its official work over Independence Day.

“While the formal mission of DOGE has come to an end, the mission to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse will continue,” DOGE said in a post on X. “It has been our greatest honor to serve the American people.”

DOGE, which stands for Department of Government Efficiency, had been established in the place of what was previously the United States Digital Service, which had been dedicated to advancing the federal government’s technological offerings and digital infrastructure. “The U.S. DOGE Service Temporary Organization shall terminate on July 4, 2026,” it said.

Musk, who departed the federal government a little more than a year ago, oversaw much of DOGE’s work, though he did not officially serve as its administrator.

In its X post, DOGE said, “Good stewardship of taxpayer dollars and accountable government are not temporary initiatives.”
